Let me explain. I’m a 35 year old mother of a toddler. I am an avowed ex-alterna chick. The other CDs on my desk are Best of Crowded House, Sisters of MercyFloodland, Matthew SweetHundred Percent Fun, and HEMRabbit Songs.
My sweet husband noticed that I was sort of bopping to Get this Party Started, so he bought me the CD for my birthday last week.
God if I don’t love it. Just Like a Pill sticks in my head and I actually LIKE it, and 18 Wheeler is totally great. I actually find that I’m not as crazy about the songs written by Linda Perry, though I like Four Non Blondes.
Actually, never heard Pink except for that commercial. And I hate that commercial, but that might be because I hate the company advertized. Is it really all that good? I’m always up for something new. What’s it like?
You’re not alone: I am 35, and I bought the new Pink CD for my 32-year-old wife for Christmas. We both love it, and it’s almost never out of the CD player.
Though I can’t stand the chorus of Just like a pill - it doesn’t seem to fit with the rest of the song.
It’s a bit of a mixed bag stylistically. Some songs are very straight-ahead grrl rock/pop (think Alanis Morissette), while some are more R&B influenced. There are a couple of slower songs, (Family Portrait, My Vietnam) that I find sort of dreary although heartfelt.
Her voice is really sweet and tough at the same time. Sorry, I’m having a tough time describing the album, but basically the first six songs just have me chair dancing, and/or bouncing up and down in my car.
Well, I get as far into pop music as Madonna, who is probably my third favorite artist ever, so pop doesn’t scare me. I am not keen on R&B, though, as pop usually portrays it. I’ll see if amazon has any samples…
erislover, I’m partial to Madonna as well. I definitely see some parallels between the two artists. I heard Courtney Love (whom I despise, but that’s another thread…), say that Pink might not have a clue yet, but at least she wants to have a clue. I can see comparing her to very early, immature Madonna. It would be unfair to compare her music to Madonna’s more mature work.
