God, Vulfpeck is awesome...I love the recent funk revival

Probably some people hear have heard Vulfpeck, some haven’t, but just FYI they’re one of many recent groups who are bringing the funk back after what feels like a considerably long period of funk-drought. I like most of their song, but my favorite’s gotta be Back Pocket. Prince, M.J., the legacy of Motown, are alive and well in that song…and the tremendously talented bassist is channeling the sound of Jaco Pastorius playing his signature sixteenth-note groove. God, I just love it!!!

Mayer Hawthorne is another really talented guy. Even Kendrick Lamar is bringing the funk.

Ah, Cory Wong on guitar? Dude can play some funky shit.

I guess I found the one other Vulfpeck fan here. Nice to meet you.

Joe Dart’s bass playing on Dean town converted me about 6 months ago. Serious skill with a fun attitude. My favourite song is Wait for the Moment.

I like Vulfpeck quite a bit. But I like the nutty neo-disco stuff more than the straight up funk.

This five minute funk guitar lesson was my first exposure to him: Cory Wong of Vulfpeck on His Funky Right Hand Picking Technique | Reverb Interview - YouTube

He has a flywheel right hand.

My current two favorites are ‘Running Away’ and ‘Baby I Don’t Know’. My friend who is a drummer introduced them to me NYE 2017.

I’ve not heard of them until this thread. Count me as a fan.

Been a fan for a bit. Posted about them in the music appreciation thread a few months ago:

Big fan of Cory Wong and Joe Dart. Joe can bust out the sixteenth notes that leave my hands shaking.

Yeah the spirit of Jaco Pastorius lives on in that bass playing - it’s a very special player who is able to carry it off. The funk lives. Flea, of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, is able to do it tastefully as well, although he’d probably rather be called “tasteless” than “tasteful” if he’s a true punker. It takes quite a lot of precision with the right hand, a muscle-memory tactile connection with the strings that takes a lot of practice to achieve.

Have you seen Victor Wooten or Oteil Burbidge play? Damn.

Definitely plan to see Burbridge with Dead & Co this summer. Have never seen Wooten live, heard his stuff with Bela Fleck though, he’s badass. Les Claypool is also remarkably skilled, but in a certain style - very brash, sometimes even endearingly obnoxious, nothing like Burbridge or Pastorius or Dart or even Flea. Claypool is generally more in the Cream “power bass” style, kinda being a rhythm guitar and a bass at the same time.

I love them.
Here’s the crowd singing along with the bass part in Dublin. Never seen this before.

Have you listened to Royal Blood? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2X8fQD3CL5I

(Hard rock duo, bass and drums; the bassist fills in all the sound - but not the way Claypool does ;))

What a great video! If that doesn’t make you smile, there is something wrong with ya!

Yeah I like Royal Blood for sure, because they’re one of the few ‘lead bassist’ groups (like Morphine.)

No one is like Morphine. Love. God I miss Mark Sandman.

Ditto!

Thanks for this thread - I had never heard of Vulfpeck before - after seeing the thread title, I listened to their album “The Beautiful Game” on Youtube, and had my socks blown off by “Dean Town.” Then I went to iTunes and bought the album - if you’re going to play like that, I’m gonna buy your album.

I’m not as big a fan of the Jackson Five-sounding songs, but the straight up funk songs - whoo baby.
