Well I decided to pull out my old armies this week and dust them off. I’ve got Dark Eldar and Sisters, with a little bit of Imperial Guard.
Honestly though I was getting bored of them when I put them away a couple years ago, so I’m thinking of making some Chaos Space Marines or Dark Angels.
Any opinions on those two armies for modeling and gaming?
Hmm listening to this chat makes me want to pull out the paint pots again.
Never was much into the actual game wierdly - I always felt out of place while playing (and was never any good) but enjoyed converting and painting the models - though I wasnt too great at that either, but it was fun.
Nah. Testor’s. Does okay for some joins, but the arms, not so much. I don’t know if they’re getting nudged and preventing the join from setting up, or if I’m using too much, or what.
Random weird question: if they did make a digital version of the tabletop game (rather than an “adaptation” into an existing game genre), would you players like the ability to create your own army, complete with customized models, with different layers of paint, custom-positioned gear, and such? Maybe an Abbadon figure lacking arms entirely? Or would that be too much to fool with for most players? Perhaps have a random model creation for people who don’t play?
I don’t know that Games Workshop would want to do so lest they lose their valuable tabletop income, but I thought the idea was cute.
Painting update! Or, rather, a lighting and photography update. I finally busted out my lightbox and lamps and tripod to see if I could get some better photographs of one of my miniatures, and it worked - just not quite as well as I’d hoped. I think the layers of sealant 1.) increase the figure’s reflectivity despite having a matte coat on top, which obscures detail, and 2.) sealant reduces the contrast between similar colors anyway.
So, here’s my Blood Angels Chaplain with Jumppack. It’s hard to see in most of the shots, but every edge on his power armor was highlighted with dark grey. In the next batch I do, I will go a shade lighter on the ‘edge’ color to compensate for the contrast loss.
I’ve just finished the cultists that came with the Dark Vengeance box set, time to start work on the actual Marines. It is intimidating because they have so much detail!
But why not just paint them and start a Dark Eldar army?
They are too much fun, zooming into your opponents deployment zone with Raiders and shooting them in the rear while your Talos slowly creep across the battlefield.
Blood Angels symbols are the easiest to get on the shoulder pauldrons. If you ever have trouble “wrapping” them, simply use a hobby knife to separate the blood drop from the wings, then reposition each piece as necessary.
Short answer? Yeah. Not one of the transfer labels I’ve done has laid 100% entirely flat to my satisfaction. Of course, my total experience with them is six. Most of my guys are using Blood Angel pauldrons that I special ordered - but a few of them are not compatible with swappable pauldrons. Still kind of in my learning curve with the transfers.
I have not tried cutting the wings out as separate pieces; The transfers are fiddly enough that trying to line up three of them together might drive me mad. I DO cut out the triangle of ‘blank’ label between the wingtips, which gives them a little better ability to follow the curve of the shoulder pad.
I have one spare tac marine with a flamer that I can’t see myself needing for my army, so I use him as my experimental piece; while I was trying a dark wash on him to see how it would look, his chapter label fell off and curled up. I re-applied it once, and it fell off again; that time, I couldn’t get it un-curled without damaging it. So I hand-painted a chapter symbol for him.
It turned out better than expected. I may try that with some other guys.
With the chaplain, I am pleased with the transfer - because although the sealant has dulled his paint detail, it has hidden any slight imperfections with his chapter symbol.
I also snip a little bit out of the top of the symbol to accomodate the curves. But it’s not always successful to the same degree from mini to mini.
I can hand paint a Blood Angel symbol pretty well. However, making it look good and making it look consistently like all the others is not possible for me. I need to work out some kind of proportion system to that end.
