I decided to magnetize my sergeant’s gun hand after all. The power sword will be a fixture, though. And I may end up putting his combat shield on THAT hand, odd as it may look.
Considering that the price for a power sword is the same as a power axe is the same as a power maul, yet they all have different rules, that arm seems like a good candidate for the magnet. Of course, some models aren’t well-suited to this unless you actually enjoy sawing through 1/4" of white metal.
I had been planning to make a new sergeant to replace the third company’s second tactical squad, which I sold on eBay, and it’s been on the block for a long time now. I had to take a break while painting up an Eldar Avatar for my son’s birthday, but I feel like I’m really close with the sergeant.
Both of his arms are magnetized, although I imagine I’ll be primarily switching close combat weapons and either leave the bolt gun on most of the time or else use a bolt pistol. Plasma pistols seem a bit overpriced for what they do, unless you really plan to be “stuck in.” It suspect it would make a better buy for an assault squad sergeant or model with a BS of 5 than for a tactical squad.
As an added bonus, I sunk a magnet into the shoulder of one of my other sergeants when his arm came unglued. Because Blood Angels denote squad number on their armour’s right poleyn (knee-guard), and the colour of the helmet indicates squad assignment, the left and right shoulder pauldrons (and thus the arms as well) are swappable beteen sergeants in the same company. I suppose the squadboyz could swap out too, if it made sense, but I imagine the magnets would work better somewhere besides the shoulders if it came to that.
As an only somewhat related tangent, I want to praise the Games Workshop paint called “Agrax Earthshade” (used to be called “Devlan Mud”). Holy cow, this stuff is great for shading lighter colours and metallic bitz with lots of detail! I’ll have to buy a few more bottles before GW decides to change the name again or discontinue whatever it’s made of.
Is that their brown wash?
The sergeant has a magnet on the back of his right (sword) hand for the shield mount, and a magnet atop his left hand for swappable pistol options.
Got the Shadowsword built and primed today. Yay.
YES! And it is fantastic! It’s just the right consistency to use right out of the bottle. GW’s been getting better about that with the regular base and layer paints, but this one is perfect!
It occurred to me some time after I posted that, as a fellow Blood Angel, you and I have more pistol choices than the average bear: bolt pistol, plasma pistol, hand flamer (I have a stack of these left over from 2nd Edition!), and infernus pistol.
If you’re not going to limit yourself just to pistols, then there’re always the various combi-weapons and of course the ubiquitous bolt gun depending on his assignment and the mission.
Just so. Infernus pistols and hand flamers are pretty sweet. And really, there’s nothing stopping me from using other magnetized weapons - as long as it’s not something big enough to overwhelm the magnet with its weight.
Stitches come out today, but I did indulge in a little painting work this weekend. All ten assault marines are primed, and five of them have a first pass at red basecoating. These are a little different from my tactical marines - spray-primed instead of brush-primed; and using GW’s Mephiston Red for basecoating rather than… Carnage Red, I think, from Reaper’s line.
I also got all the magnetized weapons mostly fully painted, and the combat shield is pretty close.
I really like the Mephiston Red. It covers great and has a nice intense hue.
Does seem to be covering in one coat about as well as the Reaper paint did in two.
I put an un-helmeted head one one of my assault marines who is not the sergeant and I am agonizing over whether or not to replace it. Decisions, decisions…
Anyone here use other forums/chatrooms/whatever for discussing 40K stuff? I like the folks here, but thinking a little larger audience for it might be good.
Anybody seen the upcoming Marine Centurions?
BTW, I find the other gaming chatrooms and forums annoying to say the least. I hate having to dig out the gems of reasonable discussion from all the crap. At least here, much of the crap has been pre-filtered.
True. I am just finding this board less and less enjoyable, personally.
I have been keeping up with the Space Marine rumors floating about, and I find them interesting. Makes me sad that there won’t be a Blood Angels codex update for a little while.
My ten man assault squad is almost done being basecoated. Three guys need a second coat of Mephiston Red everywhere but their helmets (which are Jokaero Orange). I’ll snap a picture once they’re done, as I’ve been wanting to document the process…
How is Jokaero Orange? On the conversion chart it appears to be sort of reddish, but still vibrant. I’ve been using the old Blazing Orange lately for a bunch of Fire Elementals and really like how bright it is even if it’s a little thin on coverage.
It’s a good base for going under bright orange or yellow, I think. I wouldn’t call it vibrant, necessarily.
I checked out the Jokaero Orange yesterday and yeah, it’s a little pastel.
Pastel might be a good word… I was going to go with ‘muted’. I really like it as a base for yellow or orange, so it was a good fit for Assault Marine helmets, and I’ll use it as a basecoat on my custom chapter marines when I get to them.
Got my basecoating done, starting to fill in some details. They’ve just hit the point where I wouldn’t be ashamed to field them if pressed, but they’re a long way from done.
Ugh. Citadel brushes are shit. I can’t get one of their detail brushes to keep a decent point for more than a minute at a time.
