Also, if he hangs his clothes out , a generous application should make his clothes smell nice and fresh. It would also be a shame if it appeared in his mail box all over his mail.
Gawd, what an asshole, whoever is doing it. I feel sick, just reading about it.
We have black tailed deer around here, and sure they eat the roses and the geraniums and whatever else, but I like seeing them.
Senseless killing is just sickening.
I can’t be sure if it is an adult or not. I can’t even be 100% positive that it is the neighbor I suspect. I am going by where I heard the sound come from and where the deer came over the fence. I know a wounded deer can run pretty far, but I doubt it jumped across one fence, ran across the suspects five acres, then jumped over my fence and died. Maybe, it’s possible.
The neighbors on that side of me have most of their trees cut down and all the scrub cleared off except the rear thirty feet or so before my fence. I am grateful for that because it makes it seem like I don’t have any close neighbors since I can’t easily see them. However, this means that I can’t see very well into the suspected persons property, so even if I had a camera pointed his way, I wouldn’t see anything. I have never met this neighbor and have no idea who lives there, as I have never seen them come to the fence line. I don’t think any kids live there because I haven’t heard any, but you never know.
The back two acres of my lot are uncleared and grown up enough that it would be hard to walk through. I have a shop back there where I work and keep some of my old car projects. The only people who know it exists are three neighbors who can see it through the trees, especially this time of year. A couple of years ago, somebody spray painted on one of my cars and two of the outside walls of the shop. I figure it was a teenager since they painted WHITE GIRLS SUCK BLACK DICK on one of the walls. There are some young kids living behind me, so it might be them. But that isn’t where the deer travel and I don’t think it’s them that are shooting. All I know, is that for the first time in twenty five years, I have to lock my shop up when I’m not back there.
I’m not going to go and say anything to the neighbor. I don’t want my shop to mysteriously burn down or anything. If the cops don’t want to make an inquiry, then that’s that. That the sheriff didn’t want to do anything about it didn’t surprise me. With all the building going on out here, they have more important things to do. I was advised by another county sheriff to call the game warden, if it happened again, so I did. He said that they can’t do anything unless they catch them at it, so I guess poachers are safe out here. I have made two reports now, so if somebody else reports a similar problem, or a shot ends up hitting sombodys house or something, they can’t say they weren’t warned. Maybe in another year or so when we are finally incorporated into the city, somebody may be willing to take notice.
I really like living out here. It is unfortunate that the city has moved out to me and the place is becoming like every other suburb. I get along with everything but the scorpions. People ask me, “What do you do about the deer and rabbits and skunks and racoons and squirrels and fox and possums and such?”, and I tell them, “Well, I leave them alone and watch them eat and play and run around in my yard.” They always look sort of horrified when I tell them that.
Find out who is doing this. If you don’t already have one, get a gun license, buy a gun. Practice. Post signs that say “no hunting”.
If it’s a teenager, they have a serious mental problem and are dangerous. If it’s an adult, they are more dangerous. They are missing something in their brain to cause this kind of cruelty to anything.
Stop feeding the deer and try to scare them away every chance you get.
It’s not a very nice thing to do but necessary for their protection and yours.
Check to see if “baiting” animals is against the law in your county.
This is going to sound like I’m baiting you for an argument, but I’m really not doing that. I just would like to know how you think this piece of advice would help. I’m asking because I don’t understand it, is all.
And this may be more why they don’t administer a coup de grace or shoot point blank – because they don’t want to be seen, rather than wanting to inflict extra cruelty (although if they are one of the ones with deer feeders, perhaps it’s a bit of both.)
From the sound of things, Canadiangirl is advising the use of a firearm to scare deer away from the feeder.
The DNR you have sucks bull cock. Our DNR managed to stop a poacher the was coming in to the area and poaching at night and back home in the morning a county away. The clues were a few bodies and people calling in about shots at night. This led to the discovery of the scope this really covered. Maybe in a few days I can expand on this with online sources. It’s a few years old.
This would piss me off, too. Here we have a program for hunters to distribute extra meat to the needy. Whoever shot these deer is wasting a natural resource, as well as killing needlessly. Grr.
I wonder if the person might be guilty of being over the “bag limit” and hunting out of season (more reason for the game warden to be more receptive). From Texas’ web site:
I know you didn’t specify if it was a white tail, but there’s regulations on mule deer as well.
The regulations also speak to wasting game:
It’s a violation, for either white-tails or muleys.
If it could be proved, the person faces the loss of their guns.
I wonder if a higher-up above the game warden would be interested?
No shit, our DNR is staffed by maybe 11 total CPO’s across the entire state and has the same budget for the year as I have for lunch this afternoon and they’d put a stop to this in a heartbeat.
If they are shooting a deer that is on your property, then that is tresspassing. Doesn’t matter if the deer is in season.
I was advising the purchase of a gun to protect themselves since, the OP believes, that, if they speak to the person they are thinking is doing this, their shop may accidentally burn down, etc.
I do believe the person(s) doing this is potentially dangerous. The level of cruelty they are exhibiting is extraordinary. Although I don’t hunt, many people I know do and this would sicken every last one of them.
Taking pictures, canvassing the area to see if they can find out who owns what on the qt, and report, report, report every single wounded or dead animal will eventually win. Although judging from the reaction of the various authorities, it will take quite a bit to get the interest level up.
And it wouldn’t hurt to teach the deer to fear humans by scaring them at every opportunity. It sounds awful and it probably is not what you moved to the country for but it’s for their protection.
My first thought as well. Are you sure that it was a bullet hole, or could it have been caused by a golf ball? Sounds like some sadistic prick is taking pleasure in killing animals. With your vandalism problem, it sounds very much like a teenager. If not, you may have bigger problems, because anyone who keeps up this sort of behavior as an adult is seriously troubled.
I don’t hunt, but I have some relatives that do; one of them was a former game warden. I don’t know of any of them that would tolerate this sort of activity. It gives good hunters a bad name.
Somebody mentioned deer repellant products. I don’t get the impression Stanger wants to use 'em, but here’s a website, in case anyone else wants to. www.deerbusters.com
I dealt with them a year ago, buying insecticide to ward off the dreaded emerald ash borer. They sold me what I needed, and they delivered it promptly. I can’t vouch for their deer products, for I didn’t need any.
Whoever is killing Stanger’s antlered neighbors is a nasty bastard. Even if the killer feels he is thinning the herd, what he’s doing amounts to dumping a hundred pounds of rotting meat into another fella’s backyard. That’s not acceptable behavior anywhere.
I’m not sure if this question is relevant to the situation, but if you scare away Caveman Ugg’s furry targets, is there any chance he might lob a few rounds the OP’s house/shop/garage/car’s way? Its not like that creep is a posterboy/girl for gun safety, if it is a gun.
Also, the PVC golfball cannon. I thought I saw on the internet once a clip showing one of these that was darn-near armor piercing. Is it possible he’s actually hunting them with some kind of a pvc golfball cannon? Would unlicensed home-made artillery possibly get the sherriff to look into this further?
I’d hate to think you’d have to plant a book in Marxism or the Koran under the dead deer to propel Texas law enforcement into action…
It would seem to be difficult to hit a moving deer. Perhaps you could aim it at a feeding station.
Hmmm.
Well, the sound I heard that day did sound a bit like the golfball gun in the beginning of that second video. It was deep and muffled sounding - not like the sound of a deer rifle or a small caliber handgun. I suspected a large caliber handgun muffled with a plastic liter soda bottle, but I could easily be something else.
Damn those golfball guns are powerful - punching through a car door like that.
The hole in the one deer was about 3/4" diameter. I don’t know much about ballistics, but I don’t think a small caliber would leave that big of a hole, and a golfball would proabaly make a bigger one.
There is no way to scare off the deer on my property or his. No repellent will work either. I have 4.5 acres, he has about 5, so that is a lot of fenceline. The deer can come from anywhere. As many deer as I see, that is only a very small portion of them.
A lot of people around here have tall “deer fences” to keep the deer out of their yard. They probably have gardens that they want to keep the deer from eating in, but I like the wildlife out here.
Across the highway from me is a rich subdivision where all the “new” money lives. It is where George Strait and the Spurs and the rich folks live. I think it is kind of funny that these people have a two million dollar house sitting on an acre of property. They can walk out onto their balcony and see a commanding view of - their neighbors balcony! If I had that kind of money, I would have a slightly bigger and nicer house than I have now sitting on as many acres of land I could buy.
Land - I hear the good Lord isn’t making it any more.
I don’t mean to say all the damage was from the use of the golf ball cannon. They may be using multiple weapons. The chance increases if it’s a group of teens.
I can’t find the incidents I wanted because they are buried in the 6 murdered hunters, dead deer screwing, and seven legged deer stories. I did run across the state officials from Florida scandal for illegally hunting in Wisconsin. I believe the guide they hired is mostly to blame on that one. You expect a local guide to not put you in the situation of hunting illegally.
The one I want involves the guy being proven to have shot game in a different area and registering it in Wisconsin. Maybe if I try a search for DNA I can filter the right story.
If the vandal children are not the deer killers, dress the problem neighbour children in deer costumes.
Two problems solved.
