The original website used the top-level domain for Christmas Island, hence “goatse.cx”. I believe the actual filename of the infamous picture was an innocuous “hello.jpg”.
Yeah the actual domain hasn’t worked in quite a long time and so it’s safe now.
I believe “goatse” was also said (perhaps after the fact) to be an acronym for “guy opening ass to show everyone.”
