I was totally stunned when I saw the ad. I hadn’t heard anything about it at all. The producers must have some serious balls to do this after the other flopped. Go for it, I say!
Phew! When I saw the post title I thought there was going to be a sequel to that recent atrocity.
The Japanese have been putting out new Godzilla and Gamera movies occaisionaly for some time now, but I can’t seem to find them. From what I’ve seen the more recent special effects are OK, though not up to big budget hollywood standards.

See, the thing is, it didn’t flop.
It sucked, but it didn’t flop.
As opposed to say… Election, which was a great movie but DID flop.
Godzilla made a butt-load of cash.
Read an article in EW about this woman who’s in the biz of marketing movies. She spoke of the common misconception of Godzilla doing poorly at the box office, when in fact it has done quite well. She went on to say that “she’s been asked to make more ‘flops’ like that one” and assures that there is a sequel coming. grrrr.
Not unlike Scary Movie which advertised on it’s poster “NO Sequel” and what do ya know, it made a lot of money so they’re gonna make another.
Art-schmart. Hollywood makes movies to make money, not art.
It’s amazing anything decent hits the theatres sometimes…

Know whats funny ? This latest Godzilla will likely be a better film than the Broderick muck. . . even though its dubbed and still features a man in a rubber suit.
Anyone remember the scene from “One Crazy Summer” with Bobcat Goldthwait (sp?) ??
Just saw the trailer myself last night.
I didn’t even know this movie existed but it looks just as delightfully cheesy as the old ones. It is rare that I goes see a movie in the theater anymore (bad knees) but I will be there opening weekend for this one!!
The Japanese film studio, Toho Pictures, bought back the rights to Godzilla, because they absolutely despised the Hollywood version. Prior to selling the G rights to Hollywood, Toho had vowed to never make another Godzilla flick again, and killed him off. When they saw they sludge that Roland Emmerich put out bearing their namesake, they were appalled. I can’t say I blame them. Even the corniest of the Toho Godzilla flicks are more fun to watch than that Hollywood stinker we put out.
Personally, I would actually like to see a sequel to “Hollywood” Godzilla. Why? I would love to see Toho Godzilla whoop Hollywood Godzilla’s ass all over the big screen, as only the Japanese Kaiju films can. (Kaiju is Japanese for giant monster, IIRC)
Ole flamebreath has been a staple of my inner child for my whole life. I remember seeing “Godzilla vs The Smog Monster” at the drive in when I was just a wee lad. It’s one of my fondest earliest memories.
I can’t wait for this. I saw Gamera: Guardian of the Universe on the big screen during its limited run in 1996, and it was one of the best times I had in the cinema all of that year. I’ll be first in line for Godzilla 2000, absolutely, no question.
Of course, my wife thinks I’m crazy. I tell her, “I can’t believe you don’t want to see this!” And she responds, “I can’t belive you do!”
Also, on this:
Very true. Most people think it bombed because it under-performed domestically (i.e. in the U.S.). However, these days, you have to count the international box office, which is where lowbrow American action movies tend to do really well. On that scale, Stallone’s mediocre Cliffhanger was a smash hit, and even Waterworld managed to get back into the black, albeit barely. So yes, the Devlin/Emmerich Godzilla did end up turning a profit, and yes, we’ll probably get another one. Snooze…
I’m pretty stoked about the new Godzilla movie myself. My friend and I were kinda upset when we found out that they had taken away Godzilla’s powers for the Broderick flick. But now it looks like he’s breathing fire and might even have laser vision! Sweet! They basically turned the Hollywood Godzilla into another Jurassic park. And it sucked. But this looks very promising.
[hijack]Speaking of which, I think I heard that there was another Jurassic Park sequel coming out. Sigh, hopefully better than the last.[/hijack]
I saw Godzilla 2000, twice this weekend. It’s a lot of fun.
It’s also got better fx than the most recent big G movies. If you have never seen TOHO Godzilla on the big screen, GO see it! It’s a lot of fun. Note, I said FUN. If you are looking for some sci-fi or sci-fact that is “realistic”, then I suggest you turn on the Discovery Channel.
The sad thing is, TOHO Godzilla is OSCAR material, compared to the sewage Hollywood spewed out a few yrs ago.
The best thing about Godzilla 2000, is it doesn’t take itself seriously, and pokes fun at U.S. Godzilla, and a bunch of other Hollywood flicks, like Independence Day.
Grab the kids and go! The BIG G has always been my favorite movie super monster, and always will be!
Saw it yesterday. Lots of fun, had to clap at the end. The sappy music in the end was fantastic. What a drama. I just love the Original G! Kicks Ass! Fun yes. Thank god it wasn’t hollywood material. oy!
I looked at the movie listings for my area and it wasn’t showing!!! I’m sure it’ll be showing next week, but I am sooo disappointed!
I always know I’m going to enjoy a REAL Godzilla flick. You know Godzilla will stomp Tokyo. He’ll set fire to things with his fiery breath. Planes, tanks, and artillery will pelt him with mechanized fury to no effect. There are few surprises in any Godzilla movie. It’s sort of like sitting down to a home-cooked meal. It won’t be surprising, but you know it’ll be good.
Personally, I can do without the bad effects and sub-par acting that every godzilla movie I’ve seen seems to uphold as mandatory, but it’s worthwhile for them to make 'em b/c (as this thread shows) there is a solid fanbase. What scares the crap outta me is that I saw the trailer for the next Highlander movie the other night. In a perfect world, that thing would straight to video, but, b/c of the fanbase, it’ll be cheaply made, have a limited run, and be painful. Both Christopher Lambert and the guy from the TV show are in it, and, well, ugh.
