In the case of non-romantic relationships, I’ve sometimes been more surprised by my interactions with someone online whom I’ve already known for years IRL than vice versa. It seems to me that every means of interacting with another person reveals a different facet of their personality: email, IRC/IM, telephone, and face-to-face interactions all require different modes of interaction. It’s the people that I know both online and IRL that I feel I know the best.
Sure, people can misrepresent themselves online, but they can do that IRL, too, just in different ways. And is anyone going to tell a blind person that because someone may mislead them about their appearance that they can’t form real relationships? This argument does not withstand scrutiny.
That said, romantic relationships require a degree of physical interaction that other relationships (e.g. friendships) do not. I think it can form a strong basis for a true romantic relationship, but if there’s never any RL meeting, I’d hesitate to call it “real”.
I think that’s most people’s problem. The OP did have **A ** relationship, but it was not really the one she thought she did, it was something else altogether.
I just think DtC is a puddinghead - and not in the luscious, creamy, sweet way - for posting the entire Nigerian email scam letter as if it meant something. I’d’ve called him a tool, but that would have implied that he had a useful function.

Um, to those of you arguing that “you can’t see their expressions, or hear their voices” I ask: You do realize that YM lets you use webcams, and voice chat right? This has been true for at least six years that I know of, I know because I’ve used the ability to talk to my parents online instead of making a phone call. (At one point years ago, when it was new the phone call feature was free, you see.)
