I’m going to a birthday party on the 16th (separate thread needed to understand who holds a birthday party on any Sunday, let alone Easter Sunday) and have been informed that the party will have a Latin theme. If I were 18 again I’d probably just find some sexy mama dress to put on and capitalize on the fact that a lot of people think I’m of Latin-American descent anyway. However, I’m not 18, and I’m not cruel enough to subject people to the sight of me in a hoochie-mama dress. So, I’m not sure what else I could wear to fit along with the Latin theme.
It’s probably going to be a fairly upscale event, with a high likelihood of being attended by some local celebs, so showing up in a cheesy pancho and sombrero type outfit probably won’t work. Any ideas you guys might have as to how I can play along with the Latin theme that doesn’t involve flamenco dresses or castenettes are welcome!
Also, ideas as to what to give a 40 year old bassist that I consider a friend but don’t know extremely well are also appreciated. I do know that he and I share a love of digital photography, as well as an affinity for travel… I’d like to try for slightly more personal than a gift certificate, but nothing too extravagant either. Bah, I suck at buying gifts!
I suspect that most people aren’t going to dress particularly Latin since there isn’t any kind of clothing that screams Latin. You might want to wear something a bit more summery. What will make the event Latin will be the music and the drinks.
Lots of Latin American countries have folkloric clothing. If you try to find pictures of folkloric dancing troupes for different countries maybe you’ll see something you’ll like.
Barring that, fatigues and a big cigar screams Fidelista.
Last thing I’d want to do is go “in Latin folk dress”. It’s a Latin-themed party, not a costume party! Definitely no flamenco dress or castagnettes, that’s southern Spain only.
Sexy clothes if you have them and can wear them with flair. Since you say that people often mistake you for latina, you may want to use more “radical” makeup than you normally would.
The picture book might be a good thing. I’ve found that some people prefer a couple of little ones to one of the huge, heavy ones. And I’d never give music to a musician unless I absolutely know it’s in their wishlist.
I might be able to pull of a flouncyish salsa-type dress (as long as the flounces are strategically placed ). Stick my hair in a bun, wear some bolder than usual makeup… That could probably work?
I like the picture book idea, I think he might enjoy that.
Can’t help you with the dress. But for the gift, if you know what type of memory card you friend uses that might make a good (OK, maybe a bit “practical”) gift.
