My wife and I leave early tomorrow for Hollywood and a taping of The Price is Right. We originally got tickets for the September 30th early taping. Yesterday out of the blue we received tickets for a September 29th taping. We already had plans for Sunday so we don’t know if we will attend that one. The Monday taping is for the Halloween Special, it should be fun. This will be our second time doing this, we went to a taping last March. Didn’t get picked to be a contestant. Turned out to be the April Fools episode. After 4½ hours of waiting to get in, my wife and I had about 43 seconds of screen time of the 40 minutes shown.
Good luck. ‘PLINKO!!!’, do they still play that?
I haven’t watched in a while.
They still do and still act like it’s the greatest game ever. It’s my personally least favorite game.
I don’t get the big deal about Plinko. Nor do I follow the strategy of placing the chip. If it is equally likely to bounce left or right at each pin, it seems to hit the best money slot in the middle, one would drop it in the middle.
My favorite game is the mountain climber.
Many years ago my folks and my aunt went to a taping of TPIR. They described the long wait, and how folks acted in line while waiting, and how sometimes you got a chance to leave the line to watch a new show or pilot, so you could give ratings. Mom said she’d had a dream she’d be a contestant but of course that didn’t happen. However, their seats were right behind those podiums down front, so everytime you saw them you could see my folks.
They weren’t home the day it showed on TV, but programmed the VCR to record it. I went over to their house, just in case it didn’t turn on. As soon as the program started the phone started ringing. “[Baker’s Mom, you’re on TV!!!]”
I went to a taping in 1997 during the Bob Barker & Rod Roddy years. I didn’t get picked, and my family’s seats were so far off to the edge of the studio, I couldn’t see more than a split-second blob of myself when I watched the episode. It was still a lot of fun, though.
You’re overestimating the intelligence of the average contestant. Much like how hardly anyone seems to figure out that the best strategy is to bid $1 over another contestant if you have the last bid for an Item Up For Bids (or $1, if you think everybody else overbid).
I think the joy of Plinko is that there is no strategy. Just drop a coin and hopefully win 10K
I think that’s exactly why everyone likes Plinko. It’s pretty much their one game that doesn’t really require any skill, apart from the part at the beginning where you have to guess prices to acquire the chips. It’s all just random chance.
I’ve heard that contestants aren’t actually selected at random, even though it might appear that way when you watch the show. Rather, they observe the audience members before the show and select the ones who appear really excited and energetic. Which means I’d never get picked to be on TPIR, because outwardly I’m about as emotionally expressive as Jamie Hyneman.
Have you got a copy of his book to sign?
