Lived in NY and in LA.
In NY all you need are good walking shoes and halfway decent weather. There is SO much to do - just start walking up or down Broadway and watch the time fly. Plus the restaurants, theater, museums…and did I mention restaurants?
In LA is gets a little tricky. You need a car. Period. However, if you get to West Hollywood, you can walk down Santa Monica Boulevard - or go to Beverly Hills and walk along Rodeo Drive - or go to Santa Monica and walk along the prominade, and then go down to the beach/pier. Venice Beach (by day only) is also fun.
In NY you need pots of money just to live cheap, but the city is 24/7 excitement and adventure. In LA, rents have gone sky high and forget about real estate - but it is still far cheaper than NYC. The LA weather makes up for lack of NY neighborhood walks. If you like sunny days and walks on the beach at Thanksgiving, you will have a great time in LA! If you like the four seasons and ethnic foods on every corner, you’ll love NY.
I love both cities, but it really is comparing big apples to orange groves. As far as choosing where to live? Hard choice. Good luck though. But no matter where you finally chose, you win.
Barbarian there are no shortage of things to do in LA. Something for every taste and interest. I’ll list a few of the links but will also ask you what is Mrs Barberian interested in?
LA has the best food, beaches, mountains within 1 hr drive, dessert also within 1 hr drive… movies, theater, arts, museums, history, botanical exhibits, sports, etc . etc. etc…can’t think of anything anyone could want you can’t find here…
oh, and another question… what part of LA will she be in? It’s really big here.
Thanks for the offer cado. I don’t remember where she’s going, to be brutally honest. U of C somewhere, I think. Right now she’s at Rockefeller Centre in NY, so I’ve been more concerned with that.
And checking out the university researchers is her main priority. I know she does have one person in LA that she knew here, that she will do stuff with. She was just looking for *stuff *to do.
The Getty usually requires reservations for parking unless you take a bus or pay for a cab to take you up the hill where it is located. However, it is likely not too busy this time of year.
