Golden Bear Dislikes Tiger?

Today I saw a news clip asking Jack Nicklaus what he thought about Tiger Woods threatening his record for being the youngest player to achieve golf’s Grand Slam (Tiger has accomplished this since I saw the clip). His response was something like “well the named person plays similar to how I did when I was his age but he has a long ways to go.”

First off, instead of calling him Tiger or Mr. Woods, he called him “the named person”. Second off, with all of Tiger’s skill and achievement he says he has a long ways to go. This makes me think that Jack doesn’t like Tiger for some reason (and possibly vice versa). Anybody know if there is anything to my theory?

  • Everyone* in professional golf is getting really sick of having to constantly answer questions about “the named person.” Now I personally love Tiger – he’s the reason why I’m such a big professional golf fan at the moment – but it’s not hard to see why someone like Nicklaus, widely considered to be the greatest player ever, would find it a little annoying to be besieged by reporters looking for quotes about the new guy who is going to break all of Nicklaus’ records. I don’t think Jack has any personal animosity toward Tiger, but it’s always hard for the old guard to see the new young phenom take over. What is Jack supposed to say, “Yeah, well, I was great in my day, but obviously Tiger is going to be much, much better?” The truth is that Jack has won 18 majors, and as of today, Tiger has won only four. He does have a long way to go.
