Golf 2012 Thread

Didn’t want to dredge up some moldy 2011 threads, but anyhoo. Tiger today putted as badly as I’ve ever seen him, while Lefty just seemed to sink everything in sight. Note that I don’t want my standing prediction that Tiger won’t catch Jack’s major’s record to become true, but it won’t if he keeps putting like this.

Noted that the CBS telecast of Pebble Beach was only 50% as annoying as previous years. Good for them I guess. Missing this year was pandering to CBS celebrities and top brass.

Unfortunately they still have Jim Nantz and Sir Faldo. And of course, there is the Tiger obsession.

Not only was Tiger’s putting atrocious, but there a lot of guys hitting the ball farther. Tiger’s putting has never really been his strength, but in the past he’s always had a very long game. It looks like he’s going to have to adapt and work on his skills around the green. For what it’s worth, I have never liked Tiger and I hope he doesn’t break Jack’s record.

Anyone watching the Accenture Match Play Championship? Anyone?

Aw, heck with it…Paul Lawrie is back in the top 50!

Man, I never thought we’d hear from him again. The last time he amounted to anything, I think I was still in college.

Never made the jump to the PGA, and as far as anyone can tell, he’s fine with that. Doesn’t seem to be hurting right now. Geez, David Duval has fallen off the planet, and now Lawrie is having a career renaissance. Man.

'Kay, I’ll give it another shot, and if that’s it, that’s it.

Tiger Woods had to withdraw from the WGC-Cadillac Championship with an Achilles tendon injury. With that, his career trajectory has become eerily similar to Anna Kournikova’s during her final days. How the heck does a fit 36-year-old get hurt so easily? Mark it down, folks…either he wins a major this year, or he never wins another major. His Jason Voorhees days are over.

Also firmly in the the-older-he-gets-the-better-he-used-to-be camp is Sergio Garcia, who capped off a lackluster tournament with an octuple bogey on the 3rd. He finished +4 for the day in a tournament where -4 was barely treading water. I look at things like this, and for the life of me I can’t understand why anyone ever got excited about him. His time at the top was shorter than Vijay Singh’s.

Justin Rose won, but Rory McIlroy can claim some measure of victory with a 3rd place finish, widening the gap between him and Luke Donald. McIlroy looks incredibly solid right now and is poised for a big 2012.

…that’s all I got.

Vijay Singh? He won his first PGA tournament in 1993 and won at least one tournament almost every year after that up to 2008. 34 PGA tour wins (14th all-time) in 15 years. He was on top for a long time.

The WAG for Tiger is that the incredible torque that his body generates contributes to all the pulls and tears and such that he’s suffered. In other sports tho 36 y/o’s tend to be more injury prone than younger players.
