Golf tee head dimensions.

Anyone know the diameter of the head of a golf tee? I’ve had no luck googling and I’m trying to calculate how many golf tees I’m going to need to cover a certain area for an art project.

I don’t think there’s any such thing as a standard size. My WAG would be .4" based on playing with some calipers at my desk.

A quick look at various patents and other cites leads to a figure between 3/8" and 1/2", depending on manufacturer. I think you’re going to need to pick a vendor and measure his wares before making this calculation, as that’s a HUGE difference.

The golf tee in my hand measures 1.1 cm.

OK, 3/8" = 0.375", Leaffan’s measured 0.4" and Flander says 1.1 Cm which is 0.43" so I’m gonna go with 0.4" as a good, ballpark estimate.

Let’s see, a standard mailbox is 9"x7.25"x20.5" which gives me a surface area of approximately 662 in^2 so I’m gonna need approximately 1655 golf tees. I better order 2000. Thank y’all, that’s the estimate I was trying to get.

Ack, I’m a complete moron. Ignore the above. The area the golf tee covers is 0.126 in^2 but circles don’t cover a flat surface completely. I feel like I should know this. Hmmm, must google a bit more unless someone knows that formula off-hand.

Rough guess: a 0.4" square is 0.16 in^2. 3900 tees. Using circle area, 4950 tees.
I’ll need somewhere in between.

Well, we’ve got 4 posters in this thread and some golf tees. Anyone up for a round?

If you stack them as close together as possible, circles will take up 86.6% of the square, so if you multiply .866 by 622in^2, you can still use the area you calculated for the circular head.

Most definitely.

Fore!

A mailbox covered in 4000 golf tees? Any chance of posting pics when you’re done?

Where’s that booze cart when you need it? I need to get rid of my slice!

Cool, I was trying to google that figure but I must not have been using the right keywords. Looks like I need 4275 tees so if I order 4500 I’m good. Hmmm, at the cheapest site I’ve found, that’s gonna run me about $140.

Sho’, it’s gonna look awesome. I think I’m gonna use assorted color so it looks random and I’m thinking some sort of epoxy to attach them to the mailbox should work well.

I’m confused, are you going to cut the heads off of the tees or leave them intact? That would look scary cool with 4000 tees sticking out at you.

Sign me up for the foursome. I call the role of bad golfer.

Is that using square or hexagonal packing?

Fine, but I got shotgun in the cart. Last time I drank and drove, my friend and I managed to tip the cart over. Actually, I’m laughing now just thinking of it.

I keep seeing that guy from Hellraiser going out to check his mail.

That’s the idea: a big bristly multicolored hedge-hogish mailbox. I think it’ll go great with my house.

I figure the hexagonal packing will be easier to do by hand than square packing. Dnag, I was hoping I’d need around 1000 tees, over 4000 is substantially more money and work…

Hexagonal.

Square packing can be found by finding the area of the square that circumscribes a circle. For a unit square, .5^2 * pi = .785 .

Oh… My… God… you’re THAT house! (Don’t know yours specifically, but I always laugh at those types of colored houses)

KneadToKnow, thanks for the laugh… I knew there was something brewing in my mind, but I couldn’t get it to form. Of course, now I need to clean the monitor, and convince my neighbors in the cubefarm that I’m not entirely nuts.
