When Scarlett comes back to Tara and realizes how bad things really are, she does think about going to her relatives. Give Melanie and the baby to the Wilkes, give her sisters to the Robillards, and she and Gerard would turn to the O’Haras. But she’s too proud to do it. She realizes the O’Haras don’t take charity and she can’t leave Tara. That is the first moment she grows up a little and takes on an adult’s responsibility.
Yes, I’ve read it. Many years ago…it’s a much shorter book, and I don’t know where the hell my copy went. IIRC, the main character was in love with a mulatto…she wasn’t one herself.
