Good alternatives to kindle to read ebooks

Kindle doesn’t always recognize my ebooks. I tried AlReader and its not bad, but I don’t like the interface to select books. However its better than nothing.

I also don’t like having to convert ebooks to mobi format to use them with kindle.

Any good alternatives that can read a wide range of formats, but mostly mobi, epub & pdf?

Are you asking about a device or an app? (“Kindle” can refer to both.)

An android app I can use on my android phone.

Apparently I asked this 3 years ago also. I should double check all those apps for functionality first.

I like ReadEra.

I’m…actually not sure if it does mobi, but it does do epub and pdf, handling the latter better than any other app I’ve used. (And it probably does mobi. Why wouldn’t it?)

I use FBReader* on my ancient Nook Simple Touch. But I use Calibre to handle format and whatnot issues.

  • No relation to that other FB.

I use FBReader on my Android tablet. It seems to be the most robust of all the eReader apps I’ve tried.

I use .epubs, not encoded .azw files, but I really like Moon+. If you are willing and able to convert formats, you can’t go wrong with that.

BTW, earlier thread.

I see in the old thread you mention CBR/CBZ files. Moon+ handles them, but in a lackluster way. My favorite comic reader that I’ve found is ComiCat.

Since I wrote that original thread, I’ve been using perfect viewer to read comic books. I’m pretty happy with it.

Of the half dozen apps I’ve tried so far for ebooks, I think I like pocketbook the best. The interface is good (it has book covers to scroll through), but it also has an option to turn any ebook into an audiobook.

Unless I’m misunderstanding, I just use Overdrive to read epub eBooks. It’s already on my phone for library books, and it works with other epub books I’ve downloaded from other sites.
