I own an android phone and a 7" amazon fire tablet.
I used to have a kindle, but stepped on it by accident years ago and never replaced it.
But I kind of miss the interface of a kindle over the LCD screen of a tablet or phone. The paper like feeling of a kindle was nice.
One concern I have is that I have a lot of book files that aren’t just mobi, I have a lot of epubs and pdfs too. I don’t know if a kindle device can read those. not only that but when I load mobi files onto my phone, my kindle doesn’t always recognize them.
I want something that has the feel and display like a kindle paperwhite, but recognizes mobi, epub and pdf when I load them onto my phone.
I’ve read kobo aura is good, but its more expensive than the kindle paperwhite. Used paperwhites are closer to $40, the aura is double that.
Anyone else run into this, did you just use the kindle? My old kindle would recognize whatever file I put on it. My tablet does too as long as its mobi. But kindle is fickle at recognizing files.
Sony digital paper is insanely expensive. I get the impression my only options are the kindle or one of the kobo models.
I have a Paperwhite and when I have format challenges, I just use the excellent and free Calibre to convert the formats. Super easy. In fact, I use Calibre to manage my entire ebook library as it’s much better at managing large numbers for files and sending them to specific devices.
Yeah, I’ve used calibre in the past to convert epub into mobi. But even when I do, my kindle app on my phone still doesn’t recognize the book many times.
I’ve been using a different ereader app that reads both kindle and mobi, and its easier to not have to interconvert the files and just upload them as is.
However, I could bulk convert all my epub files to mobi using calibre if needed.
Do you know if Calibre will allow me to take kindle files (mobi) and convert them to other formats? I’m also investigating non-Kindle option for reading.
Googling “e-readers” turns up several recommendation articles and lists. It looks like the consensus is that the best e-readers are Kindles, and the best that aren’t Kindles are Kobos.
Generally yes, it will convert anything to anything. That said, it will not break DRM. But there are ways of doing that that I will not elaborate upon here.
