Good drinks for a novice?

Okay, I don’t drink much. In fact, I don’t WANT to drink much. Because of this, though, my experience with alcohol is quite limited. I’ve liked the wine I’ve tried (though I don’t like the really sweet ones that much), I don’t like beer, and I don’t like whiskey. I adore champagne. I like strawberry daquiris. I tried Kahlua once and loved it, but I haven’t had it since. And that’s it.

If any of you kind people could suggest something I could order if I’m at a bar that a) won’t knock me on my ass and b) doesn’t taste too weird for a novice drinker, I would greatly appreciate it. There have been a couple of times where I got a soda because I had NO IDEA what to order. I’ll try almost anything, but I don’t want to get into shots, because as far as I can tell those are intended to get drunk on. I don’t WANT to get drunk, I just want to be able to order SOMETHING.

Amaretto Sour. Amaretto has a very low alcohol volume, so it’s not going to knock you over. It’s a drink you can sip all night long. It’s also a low maintenance drink to order - the bartender doesn’t have to do anything particularly extravagant to make it (unlike a daquiri, which’ll put you on a bartender’s shitlist immediately). You can also be comfortable ordering one at any social occassion, formal or informal.

You could try a Midori Sour. Or a margarita on the rocks (the salt really does improve it), if you nurse it for a while.

I dont mean to be rude by any means… but if you dont WANT to drink, then why drink?? Why search for something low in alcohol just to have a beverage in your hand? There are plenty of people out there who dont like to drink and still go out to bars with friends and then just drink a soda or an iced tea or something…

I had to make that point  … but since you asked, here are some drinks you might try. Since you enjoyed Kahlua, how about a Mudslide (ice cream chocolatey drink)? You could also try a vodka with cranberry juice. If you chug it down you’ll get good and drunk, but Ive found that its a great sipper drink. Also, if your into some flavor (and tomato juice) there is always a Bloody Mary. Or how about some coffee with Baily’s Irish cream liquor in it? That is a very common drink you can get most places and there isnt too much alcohol- and it tastes great!.

My advice: Learn to like beer! There are so many good ones out there, you are bound to find one you like. Before you know it, you’ll be a fat, drunk bastard* just like me!*

What kinds of beer have you tried? There are as many different kinds of beer out there as anything else.

If your experience is limited to Budweiser or Miller, you might want to branch out a bit. Find a friend with a good working knowledge and start sampling.

Course, that can be said for any kind of alcohol.

If you’re looking for good stuff to try and not just drinking because you’ve been told to, try these.

Order a flavored vodka and Sprite SINGLE TALL. You’ll get a lot of soda and a shot/shot and a half of vodka. Stoli, Smirnoff and Absolut make tasty vodkas that won’t kick your ass if you sip the drink slowly. Strawberry Stoli and Sprite is divine.

Also, a Colorado Bulldog is tasty, but may cause you to drink it too fast. (milk, vodka, kahlua and a splash of coke for fizz).

Don’t order a Long Island Ice Tea as it has at least four shots and tastes like lemonade.

Try different beers. For the most part, domestic (US) big brewery beers like Budweiser, Coors, etc. taste like piss or like water. Microbrews, especially local ones, are usually a good bet. Flavored beers (like raspberry) are a good bet if you like sweeter stuff.

I like occasionally to have a drink or two, just not more than that. Maybe I wasn’t clear. It’s not that I’m feeling forced to drink because I have friends who do, it’s just that if I’m in a situation where people are, I’d like to have one, but it’s hard if you have no idea what to order. But if I were to get drunk I would rather do that at home, which is why I had the “doesn’t knock me on my ass” qualification. If it’s something strong that I can stretch out, that’d be fine too.

As far as daquiris go, I live right outside New Orleans. I could go get a drive-through daquiri if I want. I could get one at the MALL. So I suspect while they’d put me on a bartender’s shitlist in a lot of places, here they’re pretty much assumed. How many places can you get either drive-through drinks (the straw is covered, so they’re not open…) or get drinks to go? I will definitely keep that in mind if I travel or (hopefully) move.

And as far as beer goes, I’ve tried several different kinds (not Miller or the like) and I just didn’t like any of them. I’ll try to keep an open mind, but I know I’m not the only person out there who doesn’t like beer.

Thanks for the recommendations, people. I feel like an idiot asking, frankly, but this seemed as good a place as any to ask.

A couple of Kahlua-based suggestions:

White Russian: Vodka, Kahlua, milk

A giant second on the Mudslide (frozen): Vodka, Bailey’s, Kahlua, ice cream
The unfrozen variety is tasty as well, but is rather on the strong side

I love a really good, decadent hot chocolate spiked with Bailey’s. This needn’t be strong at all. Dunno that bars would serve it, though.

Kahlua and milk is lovely, even without the vodka. Tastes just like a chocolate milk. You also might want to try Tia Maria, which is kinda like Kahlua. It’s the Coke vs. Pepsi argument of coffee liqueurs.

I’ve only been to New Orleans once, but the image I’ll always remember (in that I went with my mother and therefore had to skip the Hustler club) are the big Slurpee machines labeled “Hurricane”, “Margarita”, “Strawberry Daquiri”, etc. in a couple of the French Quarter bars.

I see what your saying. Always remember the “FuFu” drinks… they taste good, are usually frozen (so you usually sip them) and there is usually a lesser amount of alcohol in them.

And, I know you have been saying that your opposed to the taste of beer, but remember, there are MANY MANY different beers out there. Just like flavors of soda… There is even Strawberry, Blueberry, Apply etc… all very good. Plus, it is very easy to control your sobriety with beer. It may suprise you how much you COULD love beer. I have several friends who wouldnt drink it for a long time- and after several different attempts are now full fledged beer fans.

This is exactly what I clicked into this thread to say. My drink of choice for many many years. And you get a merischino cherry!

Twiddle

Oh, I hate those cherries, I’ll have to ask them to leave that off. Thanks for the warning!

The REALLY embarassing part of this thread is that I’ll be 28 next month. I’m not some just-turned-21 college kid. Nope, that’ll be my baby brother next year, except for the college part. Eek!

As a bartender I can tell you that anything with a lot of citrus (this includes sour mix) is best. For some reason citrus has an almost magical (Majickle for my goth and wiccan friends) to kill the taste of alcohol.

Kahlua in coffee is really good, too.

The only beer I’ve ever had was a Miller, and it tasted like water. In retrospect, better that than the piss.

If you don’t like Cherries, you won’t like Amaretto - try getting a Midori Sour.

I like cherries, just not maraschino cherries. I don’t know what they do to those things, but ick. One of my favorite memories is eating cherries straight off the tree with my cousin once, when we were about ten and twelve. Oh, yum!

Citrus is good. Right. taking notes

Well there’s always the screwdriver (Vodka and OJ.) I’m not a big drinker: I mention this only because this is the easiest drink for me to swallow (creamy-type and daquiri-type drinks have too much sugar for me.)

I also mention this because OJ also is a favorite choice to mask the flavor of other, less licit, drugs. Well, if it works for me (with alcohol you goof!) AND them, well, two anecdotes make data

FYI, Kahlua and cream (always served on the rocks) has less alcohol then a white Russian.

If you are allergic to corn then you will have problems with a lot of drinks. Bourbon and beer are made with corn (Budweiser products are made with rice for that reason).

If you are like me, you want to be able to consume alcohol at a bar without getting drunk or feeling ill (I like to listen to live blues bands). I usually drink a non-alcoholic beer between drinks.

If you like vodka then it mixes well with orange juice (screwdriver) and cranberry juice. If you like black licorice but find Uzo too strong then Drambuie is a good liqueur (sweet but with a bite). It is traditionally tossed down (as in a friendly toast) although some people sip it.

Anyone in the mid 40’s or older will remember when Miller had a yeasty taste to it. Very distinctive. They changed it in the late 70’s to the modern piss water it is (they all are).

American beer: Mop water from a dog washing enterprise strained through a dirty gym sock.
