Good DVD releases in the past 6 months?

I was in the mood to watch a movie yesterday so I went to the store and browsed for a bit but I didn’t see anything that piqued my interest. So, are there any DVD movies released in the past six months that are worth buying or renting? Oh, and foreign movies released in the past couple of years are fine too.

I quite enjoyed V for Vendetta.

V For Vendetta
Lucky Number Slevin
Slither (comes out Tuesday, great if you like funny horror movies)
Arrested Development Season 3 (not a movie, and better to start with Season 1, but hilariously good)
The Office Season 2 (again not a movie, but also amazingly funny and well-written)

Thank You For Smoking

I thought Stick It was pretty good. Really impressed me with the insane amount of work gymnasts have to do.

The Proposition. It just came out last month on DVD. Please please see it, it’s gorgeous and violent and wonderful.

Also I second Thank You for Smoking and V for Vendetta.

Here’s a point of reference for people trying to recall releases in the last six months.

Really Liked:
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
Running Scared
Silent Hill

Were at least worth watching once:
Green Street Hooligans
Last Holiday (I’m not big on comedies, but this one was decent)
Friends With Money
Poseidon

Yeah, that’s about it.

Good fairly recent foreign movies:
Twin Sisters (Dutch)
Noche De Reyes (Spanish.)
Tokyo Godfathers (Japanese. animated)
Les Revenants (French…the end was nonsensical, but it’s worth watching)
El Espinazo Del Diablo (Spanish. Get this one by the end of the month for maxium effect)

I wish I’d skipped:
Heaven (Italian)
I’m Not Scared (Italian)

Was Inside Man released in the past 6 months?

Brian

+1 for Thank You For Smoking
+1 for The Proposition

I’m not sure I’d recommend** Hard Candy ** for everyone but I found it very well acted and thought provoking.

**History Of Violence ** was well, violent but pretty good.

'Nother vote for Hard Candy. Defintely worth a rental, IMHO.

I absolutely adored that film. Though I think it’s somewhat strange that you brought it up in a thread about recent DVD releases, as it has been available on DVD since early '05.

Was it recently re-released or something?

Check out the first two seasons of Veronica Mars. You won’t be disappointed.

V for Vendetta, Imagine Me & You, and *Transamerica *were good Hollywood movies released in the past few months and *L’Auberge Espagnole *and its sequel, Russian Dolls; Wasabi; A Very Long Engagement, and À la Folie… Pas du Tout are all foreign films released in the past few years that I’ve really liked.

Picked these up the other day: Inside Man, Brick, Art School Confidential, Jarhead, Hostel. Have yet to watch any, but enjoyed them all in theatres.

Great film. Beautifully shot, well acted, decent story.

I really liked Syriana too.

The Good:

Stick It–I would’ve easily skipped this had I not seen a television ad for the DVD that piqued my interest. Glad I saw it because it was a good, light entertainment. The actress who plays Haley will be a major star in the next five years, too.

Slither–Oh how I love this movie! A good old school style monster movie that’s gross and funny with Nathan Fillion and Elizabeth Banks! Can’t ask for more.
The Bad:

London–Avoid this boring Jessica Biel stinker. Jason Statham is good in it but unfortunately there’s too little of him and too much of everyone else. Plus the movie just flat sucks.

Those are the only DVD’s released in the past six months that I can remember seeing lately because I’ve mostly been watching older movies from the eighties and up that I never got around to watching before.

A few of mine are allready mentioned, so Ill just throw another nod out to Running Scared, Brick, and Hard Candy. And I’ll throw in a reccomendation for The King

Night Watch finally made it a few months ago, if you’re into Russian Vampire movies

Oh yeah, Brick was just amazing! One of the best movies I’ve seen all year (although it may have originally come out in 2005). Definitely see that one.

I haven’t watched it yet, but I was quite happy to see the DVD release of the whole 3 hrs 1973 TV-miniseries FRANKENSTEIN: THE TRUE STORY.
