I recently signed up again for Cable tv, and I picked up the HD package. My current tv supports 720p, however, at 20 inches, watching the HD channels was not aparticularly mind blowing HD experience.
I’m planning on shopping this weekend for a new HD tv, and I’m thinking of getting an LCD unless there are better alternatives out there. I’m not a big spender, but I’m willing to spend a reasonable amount on a TV in the 32 inch range, or maybe a bit bigger if I get a good deal.
What are some good brands of HD TVs? And should I go with LCD, or projection or something else?
I was thinking in the $500 dollar range. I’ve seen some deals on Walmart.com for 400s, but I’m willing to go up to 500s if needed. I’m not an experienced TV buyer :), so I don’t really know what kind of prices are out there.
Looks like a pretty cool deal, but I only have a studio apartment, and behind where my current tv is and where I would put the new one is a bookshelf built into the wall so no room for a wall mounted TV there.
I’m going to try to get one that can be mounted on a regular entertainment center or stand. If I get into the 40+" sizes I’m not sure if it will fit in the corner where I’m looking to put it.
That unit can be set down on a entertainment stand - they all come with removable stands. You could probably sell the mount on Craigslist for $50 as well.
I was TV shopping just the other month and decided on this 32" LG and I’ve been very happy with it. My roommate also has an LG, they’re good sets.
Samsung is an excellent brand as well. They have the best picture out there, IMO, but for me the difference between the Samsung screen and the LG screen wasn’t enough to justify the extra cost of the Samsung.
We have a Samsung 32" LCD that is about three years old now, and we are still very pleased with it. When we went shopping for it we felt the Samsungs and the Sonys had the best pictures. The Sonys were more expensive, so Samsung for us.
I’m a big fan of both Samsung and LG. I have a Samsung in front of me, and have been very happy with it. I’ve also installed a whole bunch of LG sets in a pair of sports bars. This is about as difficult a test as a set can get - 18 hours a day - and they have performed exceptionally.
Sony used to be a great brand, but their less expensive units are now actually re-branded Chinese manufactured units. Their top end is still good and actually made by Sony, but you’re not going to be purchasing that end of the line. So I shy away from Sony entirely these days as I don’t like to reward their decision to water down what used to be an exceptional brand. If I want cheap crap, I’ll buy a Visio at CostCo.
