I’m trying to break into programming and get a job doing that. I have a minor in math (maybe math and computer science - pending) and will have an arts degree in philosophy in december. I’ve done three months of internship work as a web developer. If I can’t land a regular programming job, what other jobs would you ppl recommend for someone right out of college? I know there are retail jobs that college grads can get, like manager in training jobs - and something like that might work as a backup, but i need a desk job because of my legs. So, I wondering what’s out there for someone like me just out of college…a desk job where I’m at a desk all day, entry level work…where my experience would be looked on especially favorably… to stay off welfare.
There are plenty of jobs that are just generic ‘college grad’ requirement jobs that pay pretty decently, and many of which are desk jobs. Insurance claims adjuster is one I can think of off the top of my head. It sounds boring, but actually isn’t that bad. When I graduated with a friend who was in similar circumstances as you, I went into biotech and got paid next to nothing, he went into workman’s comp and got substantially more money.
One thing you may want to consider is that some of these jobs may require you to not get paid for a few months while they train you, and if you can weather that storm, it can be a very good thing because plenty of other people will be turned off by the lack of an instant paycheck. Just be sure they aren’t not paying you just so you can be in a 100% commission job at the end where you ALSO won’t get paid (e.g. I would not recommend becoming a realtor, Amway or Wold Financial Group salesperson, etc.) My wife got a degree in biology and didn’t want to work in a lab, but eventually found her way into a healthcare job. It required six months of training and she started off getting crappy shifts, but the only starting requirement was ‘a college degree’. She is now a senior respiratory therapist with Kaiser and making good money. That wouldn’t work for you specifically, since it’s a ton of walking around treating patients, but there are plenty of desk jobs in healthcare as well, and it is very stable work in any economy.
I don’t care if you are being trained, if you are not being paid, it is not a job.
You would qualify as a teacher in many circumstances. Public schools may require more education credits, but private schools aren’t bound by those requirements.
Not to diminish your situation ultraman100…the current economy is not helping the situation for many college graduates. But when you were deciding to major in philosophy years ago, what did you hope to do with that degree after graduation? What sort of career path did you envision then?
Amway.
In my observations one of the fastest growing IT jobs is outsourcing project manager. Basically they need someone who speaks understands business requirements and programming requirements well enough to explain to the offshore teams what needs to be done.
Something tells me there was not a whole lot of planning…or forethought put into this guy’s choices…
He’s asking people on a message board what he should do with his life. I just don’t get it. :smack:
One of my favorite quotes from a loudmouth co-worker who couldn’t stand unmotivated, lazy, or willfully ignorant people:
“DO SOMETHING! ANYTHING! EVEN IF IT’S WRONG!”
The idea being conveyed was: Dude, any movement in any direction is movement away from your current “woe is me” position. And that’s inherently a good thing.
Temp work. A LOT of hiring is now Temp and even Temp to Perm.
I’m not quite sure what your point was here. The guy’s question was asking for suggestions on how to do SOMETHING, ANYTHING to improve his options of getting as job. Frankly you are a judgmental <something I can’t say in this forum>. Yeah he is not likely to get an Epiphany from one single post here; but you are going to call a guy out for not trying hard enough, then bitch about his direct effort to try>
Well why don’t you get the hell off your shiny entitled horsey your gramma bought you, and shut up if ya can’t say something useful?
