Good lower cost hotel options for NYC area?

I don’t mind staying in Brooklyn or NJ as long as the hotel is fairly close to the train/subway line.

Not too keen on Airbnb but I will look into those if somebody has personal experience with the place. This would be for me and my GF. Probably in first 3 weeks of January.

Are you willing to stay in Queens? IIRC, there are some less expensive places to stay in Flushing and Long Island City.

You might also want to consider a private room in a hostel or a YMCA.

I suppose it depends how “low cost” you want to go. I’ve paid a little over $100 a night at two different places in Manhattan: The Wellington Hotel near Rockefeller Center (downsides: quite old, rooms were tiny) and the Yotel in Hell’s Kitchen (downside: tiny rooms, goofy as hell design). Of course prices vary seasonally.

I don’t need a dirt cheap place. Queens is OK as long as it’s near the subway- up to 15 minute walk to a station is OK as long as the neighborhood is good.

I got a great deal at Boro Hotel in LIC last time I was there. Big rooms with good views, minimalist Bauhaus style. It’s near subway stops, but I usually took Uber a few minutes to Midtown.

Someone mentioned Yotel and there’s also Pod Hotel. I’d definitely recommend either. Never stayed in either in NYC, but I have in other cities and I’d definitely stay at one or the other in NYC. Expect modern and very small rooms, but way above the roach motel level of tired old properties.

We stayed in The Perl last year, and it was reasonably priced, and in what most other people would call a good location in Manhattan.

I’ve stayed in Jersey and took NJT in . It was only a couple or so train stops to Penn Station, which was quicker then the subway from the outer boros.

I once stayed in Yotel in NYC. While I did not like the experience, the room was way too small for my tastes and there were very little amenities and what I like best about hotels is the pampering, it was definitely inexpensive but clean.

Varies wildly also by date, even in-city. This last weekend there were major-chain properties in Midtown that were going for $110/night Sunday and Monday.
But yes, LIC is usually a place to look into for reasonable pricing.

Yup, the biggest factor in getting a deal is probably whether you have some flexibility on date of stay.

Bingo! I’ve booked more hotels than usual this year and variable rate pricing is definitely in effect. And, it’s just based on occupancy not just events or weekends. It really is amazing how prices can vary from night to night even without hitting a major convention or sporting event. The days of the system updating at midnight on Tuesday with the new rates are well over.
