NAF, if by blended drink you mean with crappy pre-made drink mix, hell no. I like to use quality, from scratch and mostly traditional ingredients. Though as DrDeth mentioned I have been blending them with ice lately, which may not be strictly traditional, but that’s because it’s been like 90 almost every day for the past month this summer.
On the other hand, that’s how Hemingway’s daiguiris (the Papa Doble) were made for him- they were basically frozen daiquiris with grapefruit juice and a little maraschino liquor added. So the frozen daiquiri isn’t entirely untraditional
Gottcha. Daiquiri is just one of those drinks that can mean different things to different people. No judgment (since you aren’t using a mix, lots of judgment if you were) . The more sugar you add and the more iced down it is the less the quality of the rum matters is all.
Solost: I will be cooking indoors. Outdoor cooking in Texas is a good idea in November or March. Not July-August. Saturdays in August, you get all the chores done really early, then shut the door until Sunday night.
That’s pretty much my recipe except that I add rum and orange juice and will be marinating the chicken in that overnight.
Yeah, I hear you-- that’s why I was asking for a good mid-priced rum. And Cruzan was a great recommendation- not just mid-priced, but dirt cheap, and it tastes great. And I don’t like sugary drinks-- I only add enough simple syrup to take the edge off the sourness of the limes. But I’m finding with the Cruzan, that’s hardly necessary.
Awww, c’mon BeeGee, barbecue knows no season. I live in Michigan, and I’ve BBQed when it was 0 degrees in January. On the flip side-- if was in your shoes, when it’s like 110 in the shade on a Texas July, I would dump a bucket of icewater on myself or something and flip that chicken. then run back to the A/C
But rum in the jerk marinade…hmm, thanks for that idea, think I will try that!
Yeah Cuzan is to rum what Evan Williams is to bourbon. Middle shelf quality with rot gut prices. Way way too good for the price point. Don’t know of any other liquor styles that have one of those (though I would be happy to learn). Beefeater gin is close but a little too expensive to qualify.
As it happened, my next door neighbor had the grill out this afternoon and he gave me some space and his superior grill skills in return for a skewer. Papa Doble with curzon gold and fresh pineapple in an infuser mason jar. I’m a sweaty, but pretty happy camper.
