Good Music?

I’m looking for some good rock / alt. rock to check out. So, a poll:

In the genre of rock and/or alternative rock, what are your 5 favorite songs?

Thanks!!

can’t narrow it down to specific songs, but here are some cool bands:

Social Distortion
Soundgarden
Jawhawks
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Neil Young

go wild!

Thats a large pond, but here are some of my favorites: Browneyed Girl (eiher Van Morrison or Jimmy Buffet), Whiter Shade of Pale (Procal Harem), Free Bird (Lynrd Skynrd), Born to be Wild ( Steppenwolf), Slow Turning (John Hyatt), Up on the Roof and Under the Boardwalk performed by the Drifers.

Let me give you a semi-standard indie rock response:

Pavement (Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain)
Slint (Spiderland)
Tortoise (Millions now living…)
Wilco (Being There)
Yo La Tengo (I Can Hear…)
Les Savy Fav (Rome)
Built to Spill (Perfect from Now On)
Neutral Milk Hotel (In an Aeroplane over the Sea)
Pixies (blah blah, everything, they inspired Nirvana, blah blah)
(Radiohead) (Blah blah, everything but Pablo Honey)

Ok, seriously, though, Clinic is awesome. I think Internal Wrangler just got released in the States. And American Analog Set, Know by Heart. And Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Tyranny of Distance.

Also, if you’re semi-adventurous, and feel like breaking down a few preconceptions about country music, you could check out the (dying) alt-country scene. All Uncle Tupelo records, all Whiskeytown (or Ryan Adams) records; Son Volt, Trace; early Old 97’s records; Neko Case.

But, seriously, I enjoy (except Tortoise, who I have not heard) all those, I tried to give a good representation of major indie musicians.

You might want to check here: http://pitchforkmedia.com/top/90s/ for a very biased but very interesting top 100 list. Hope this helped.

alt rock:

Fantastic planet by Failure. the whole album is awesome.

My current 5 favorites are:

Coldplay : Trouble
The Strokes : Hard to Explain
White Stripes : One More Cup of Coffee or Dead Leaves…
Thursday : Paris in Flames
Waxwing : All My Prophets

that list changes weekly or so, though…

“Agaetis Byrjun” by Sigur Ros is the best thing I have heard in a long, long time.

Continuing the Scandinavian post-rock theme, Monopot’s “Something is like Nothing was” is well worth searching out.

I second McStain’s American Analog Set recommendation (as my username might show :o) but would have to say that “The Fun of Watching Fireworks” is a better bet.

Mogwai are also always a good bet - “Rock Action” is very good.
