Well, for some of us, anyways. 
It seems that male mortality rate in the US is so high, that by the time a man makes it to age 36 he’s outnumbered by women, even though more males are born than females. So, I’ve only got to make it 2 more years and the odds will tilt in my favor!

Tuckerfan, on account of your OP I had to go and see what the numbers actually looked like. So I went to Census 2000 Summary File 1 and clicked on the “detailed tables” link in the first paragraph, where it lets you pull up a bunch of more specific tables. What we want to look at at here is the various permutations of the “sex by age” tables, which can be looked at by geography, ethnic group, and who-all knows what else.
For instance, in Tennessee, where you reside, women outnumber men in the 30-34 age bracket. So if you’re not planning on moving, you’ve already made it!
What’s scary is if you look at the breakdown for blacks (nationwide). Seems that women outnumber men from the 18-19 age group, on up. While young black men are probably one of the most undercounted groups in the Census (yeah, I know, we did a net overcount, but some groups were still undercounted), that’s still pretty depressing news.
Sigh.
Seeing as how I’ll be 30 in about 3 weeks, and I live in Tennessee, I suppose I should give up on marrying now. Either that or move to Alaska.
