I’m going to be re-wiring a clients computer and hard drive packed home office, and I plan to use split-finger wiring duct - that U shaped plastic channel with a snap on cover. The problem is that the stuff is typically sold to people who apparently don’t care about price because they are spending their employer’s money. I’m not going to spend nearly $100 for a six foot stick of extruded PVC from the local electronics retailer.
What is as good an on-line source of this as monoprice.com is for cables?
Here’s a list of Panduit distributors – maybe you can buy direct from one of them.
Or online places like CableOrganizer.com have Panduit (and other, cheaper brands) for sale.
P.S. If he isn’t going to change it that often after it’s built, the solid-sided ductways are cheaper than the ones with the openings all along the way. You can use them, with open junction boxes at the locations where most of the cables exit. And any others along the way, you can just use wire cutters to cut a V-opening wherever you need one.
CableOrganizer.com seemed very high priced. I mentioned monoprice.com because they have cables for $6 that my local electronics store sells for $24.99.
This re-work of his system is prompted by degradation of nice, neat tidy job I did for him 5 years ago by constant swapping and re-arrangement of equipment. I had originally installed a very nice Anthrocart system, and all the power, ethernet, USB & Firewire hubs and video cables were nicely dressed. There is a cabinet for racks of hard drives that exhausts hot air directly outside. But since then his main computers have changed, as have his TV provider, TV, ISP and upgraded from 100 Mb to gigabit ethernet. I think we need the split ducts because any cable I install might change within the next year, or the location of any particular piece of equipment.
