So, what’s a good source for getting a feel for the typical salaries (by region or city, hopefully) of different positions/professions?

You can try salary.com. It seems to be fairly accurate in major markets, and less so in minor ones. For instance, it seems to consider the Providence metro area to be only a little less expensive than the Boston metro. For my job/experience level, it said that I would be making about $10K more than I am, or I could expect to in this area.
