Good Things Accomplished By Republicans

Just a note that JC’s note…

…applies generally, including to comments like this:

Let’s try to stay on track.

Doesn’t that also mean that the EITC was proposed and enacted under a Democratic Congress, greatly expanded under a Democratic House, and made permanent under Obama?

Civil Liberties Act signed by Reagan in 1988, which hopefully set precedent that will prevent a Muslim Registry.

That’s just wrong on such a fundamental level, it’s a wonder the pixels didn’t refuse to allow themselves to be arranged in such a configuration.

Cite? I hear that “blood in the streets” comment from libs all the time. Do you have any evidence that concealed carry laws are causing the modern day equivalent of the OK Corral gunfight?

Can you guys take gun control to another thread?

As did most progressives back then. Don’t judge historical figures by the standards and contexts of today. When you’re raised in a given environment, you become a product of and carry the values and cultural biases of that environment. There’s no such thing as innate morality.

President Ford signed the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975 which implemented special education programs nationwide.

When the Smith family of Rhode Island brought suit over the school district’s actions the SCOTUS ruled in March 1984 against their ability to recover attorney’s fees. In response Reagan signed an amendment (passed by a Republican controlled Senate and Democratic controlled House) to the EAHCA to effectively overturn the court’s decision.

That is because the GOP was the party of liberalism and egalitarianism back in the 19th century. The modern GOP does not support those things. The democratic party was the party of authoritarianism and social oppression up until the 1950s or so. Efforts to hold up the parties because of what they did in 1870 isn’t really applicable. It is more about liberal vs conservative, not republican vs democrat.

Holding up the GOP because of its anti-slavery efforts is meaningless because the kinds of people who did that wouldn’t be republicans now.

It definitely has always gotten bipartisan support. It’s a program that I’d give credit to both sides on. There’s enough room to share with all the people involved in creating and supporting it. Since the thread is about good things Republicans accomplished…
