My kitty Ziggy is at the vet with a urinary blockage. We caught it early, so I’m hopeful his blood work is still ok and his kidneys aren’t damaged. They’re going to try a manual procedure to unblock him, but if that doesn’t work he’ll need a more invasive procedure.
My father the small animal vet used to say that catheterizing a male cat with a urinary blockage was one of his favorite jobs. Because the cat was so grateful to be able to pee.
One thing I learned when assisting him - when they do manually unblock him, stand out of the way.
There is a procedure if Ziggy gets blocked up frequently, where they reroute the ureter into the intestine. It sounds weird, but it really helps.
Vet just called. Not as good as I hoped. They need to keep him catheterized and on IV until tomorrow because his kidney enzymes are elevated.
ETA: Thanks Shodan! I bet he will feel better, poor guy. I lost my first cat to kidney disease (6 years of saline boluses three times a week at home). I’m very nervous about kidney issues.
I’m scritching my cats Tina & Leon extra exuberantly in order to build up a huge amount of catic charge in the world; everything we don’t use here will hopefully help out Ziggy (and other cats too, I suppose, but mostly it’s for Ziggy).
Aww, I hope Ziggy’s ok. What a beautiful boy. I’ll work up some catic charge with Harley and Twig, too!
I hear you on kitty kidney problems, gah. I’ve been on a Yahoo kidney kitty forum for years now. There are also a couple Facebook groups. While it’s not fun, there’s a lot that can be done for kidney issues. Hopefully you won’t need to and Ziggy’s numbers are elevated simply because of his current situation, but let me know if you find you need more info.
I have 2 cats with urinary issues. One of them died of cancer, but lived a full life eating CD Hills Science Diet/prescription food to the tune of $60 a bag. The other one had kidney surgery before I adopted her and also eats CD. I wish Ziggy all the best.
PS - I’m new here. Thanks for having me, and bless you all.
Zigs came home today. He was a good kitten overnight at the vets and peed like a racehorse after they got the cath out. When I got him home he jumped up, wolfed down his food, drank a bunch of water and peed! Such a difference from the kitty who could barely walk, wouldn’t eat or drink, couldn’t pee and cried when he was touched.
He’s been a cuddle bug all night. His sister is so happy to have him home. She cried a lot last night and slept with me (which she never does). She dragged Zigs favorite toy around the house last night, too.
