Good U.S. vacation spots for a single woman without a lot of money?

I’m not broke. If I were, I wouldn’t be going anywhere. However, I do not have the resources for hedonistic vacations of the type I might like to take. I just want to go somewhere fun, with interesting things to do and/or interesting people to visit. I do not go camping, and I don’t know how to ski.

Hmmm…my suggestions are mostly outdoorsy, but I have been to the Youth Hostel in NYC and it isn’t as terrible as you might think. NYC is expensive to eat, but if you are willing to walk some, the subway is reasonable, Central Park is free, Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building are cheap, theater can be cheap.

Well, you don’t say exactly how much money, or how much time. But you can get to Hawaii from LA for under $600. And there is a really nice traveler hostel on Maui where you can stay for $40 a night in a single. It is a nice place to go in January.

Well, right now, I’m stuck in the middle of planning a last-minute trip to Boston for Christmas. (Damn flaky family, though I love them.) So unless I can score some really cheap last-minute tickets somewhere, I won’t be going for a while. Sorry that I didn’t specify it before–I submitted my OP in a rush between airline ticket site browsing.

I’m looking for ideas at the moment, as I’m trying to bully my parents into letting me buy their plane tickets and it’s not going so well.

It would be no more than about a week, as that’s my limit on being in places where I don’t know any or a lot of people. I’ve gone to meet folk that I hadn’t met in person before (to the horror of my family) and enjoyed myself immensely.

I really can’t specify an amount of money, as I have to fly out of a tiny airport, which always increases the cost. I stayed in a hostel before, in San Francisco, and enjoyed meeting people. A lot of people, as the place was pretty full. I’m not going to be up to high-priced hotels, and public transit or a good walking town is essential, as I don’t drive.
