Goodfellas -- that blue stuff

Surely some doper got this reference in the movie Goodfellas. When Karen describes her first meeting with the wives, one woman is having a bright blue substance painted on her skin. What is it, what is it for, and what has replaced it in modern times for whatever purpose it once addressed? Listen, I was just a kid in the '70’s but I remember weird cosmetic names like Dippity-Do hair gel et al. But that blue gunk painted on looks borderline surreal – like Scorsese is just screwing with the viewer.

It’s a peel off mask. I can’t remember the exact name but it was made by Max Factor and popular in the 80s.

You applied it to your skin, let it try and peeled it off. It would take all the dirt and dead skin with it.

And masks of that type are still widely available, whether peel-off or rinse-off.

O … kay. I remember most peel off masks from the '80’s were clear, or translucent white. But if people in the 70’s really needed the visual appeal of the bright blue, fine. But the particular name would be a cool bit of trivia to know.

Well, a little Googling suggests that there used to be a Max Factor Blue Mask, a discontinued product. So that’s pretty much it.
