I did search* on the subject of Goodreads and all the posts were old.
The last day or two goodreads has been down more than working and I’m wondering how many of you are still active there and if not, have you found somewhere else to talk about books?
I feel like it’s been getting worse over time (too busy?) but that’s so subjective.
I have always found the goodreads site problematic, but I love a lot of the people in my groups and want to keep interacting with them.
*there was someone who linked to a straight dope goodreads group that is not active and talk about amazon taking over goodreads, all of which is old news.
I noticed it was down yesterday too. I mostly use it to keep a list of my books, and do my reviewing over here. I like it even less now that they’ve updated the site because it makes it harder for me to read, and I only use it from my phone if I absolutely must.
I only use it to track my books and talk with some friends. When they sold to Amazon, I deleted my account with thousands of reviews because I kept finding them elsewhere despite having toggled that function off.
I really like Goodreads, and wish I had been using it earlier (I just checked and it’s up for me). I use the review function for my own benefit, namely giving a cursory sketch of why or why I did not like a book, so that years from now I’ll know if I read it and what I thought of it.
That’s been particularly useful when I’ve read part of a series and then dropped it, because I often can’t remember if I dropped it because I didn’t like it, or if I dropped it because I wandered onto something else.
This thread made me realize I hadn’t checked their “new releases” in a while, so I just did that and came up with about five things to look forward to before the end of the year. Yay!
I have only found good recommendations when in groups where people are all reading the same book. I get to know who likes the same things I do, and then I check out what they are reading. works well for me.
this forum tried to get me to edit and then multiquote rather than do a third post in a row but didn’t work. >:-(
They were on Amazon, WorldCat, and a couple of other places (probably skimmed by non-Amazon entities). My review style for GR differed from the tone and focus I used for sites like Amazon; for example, I was willing to include personal anecdotes that seemed fie for GR initially, but which I didn’t want on Amazon’s huge site.
