Can someone explain the Goodyear Welt to me? I looked on Wiki, but it was unsatisfying.
Ah, you were so close…just look at the images returned for Goodyear Welt…and if the image doesn’t help you…well, tough noogies:
So the Goodyear welt just means that the sole is stitched on the outside? (Still )
No, it means that the upper and the insole are stitched to a welt, not to the outsole. This way, you can replace the entire outsole without taking apart the entire shoe. The stitching on the outside of the shoe is merely a consequence of welt construction. It’s called the Goodyear welt because Charles Goodyear Jr. invented a machine that stitched the welt onto the shoe, though the term does include handmade shoes as well.
So the upper and the insole are stitched to the welt, and the welt is stitched to the sole?
It’s when you’re hit particularly hard by a Goodyear tire.
I thought it was a bad Goodyear tire with a welt on the side.
(There I go, thinking again)
