Goofy Names

I’m in contact with a lot of black people from all walks of life at my job and I’ve seen the damnedest names ranging from Rwanda to Toshiba to Chandolier (no, i’m not joking).

Were goofy names like this prevalent back in the early twentieth century or are they a recent phenomenon?

I believe it started in the 70’s when black Americans were trying to get in touch with their African roots (no pun intended). I’m not sure how many names are actually African in origin and how many are created to “sound” African. Just a WAG. YMMV.
