Google apparently pulls the plug on Google News Archives

Several years ago, Google said that they would no longer be adding new content to the archives. They also took down the Google News Archives site, but the content was still accessible from the Google News search as a separate selection in the drop down. And now that’s gone. It does have the drop down of ‘specific dates,’ but those are only for recent dates. Apparently it’s just gone now.

Maybe I was the only person using it, not that I need to use newspaper archives in general very often, but they had a pretty decent selection of local newspapers.

No likee!

Boo indeed. It really seems like Google, having taken over the material, could have kept it in some tiny pocket of their vast industrial server farms.

Do you mean the Usenet archives (formally Dejanews)?

Yeah the actual newspaper archives seem to be working perfectly fine. Here’s a page I accessed right now.

Looks like the archives are still intact, but the search option has been disabled.

And nothing of value was lost.

Well it looks like the search junction is back to working again.

A good bit of what I know about my family history comes from articles found via Google News archives. Thanks for the reminder that I need to download the content very soon.

I don’t know about a good bit, but I did use it from time to time. I’ve never understood why companies pull the plug on such things. I do know it costs something to keep the info, but they already have it!
