Google Chrome redirecting me to Spanish

Pulling up a website, Google Chrome decided I needed the page translated to Spanish. I turned it off but now the website gets redirected to their Spanish version. Think of me typing straightdope.com and it automatically redirecting to straightdope.com/es/ everytime.
I took Spanish out of chrome settings
I cleared the recent cookies - no effect
I cleared all cookies - no effect
I cleared all site settings - no effect
I turned off my VPN - no effect

No other web site does this and MS Edge works like it should. So how do I fix this?

Note: Turning off my VPN seems to work after a few page loads. My VPN should have been a US IP address so I’m guessing that’s the problem.

If you click the settings option at the bottom of the main Google search page, you can set your region. Since you’re using a VPN, it wouldn’t surprise me if someone else using it set it to a Spanish-speaking country. Or, yes, if the VPN’s actual connection to the site was using an IP assigned to a Spanish-speaking country.

The above said, I’m not sure that option is available if you don’t log in, and you might not log in to Google when using a VPN.
