Problems with Google Chrome

Every month or so Google will decide that I’m German, and switch the screen language to German. Now, since about the only German word I know is dummkopf, this does not really make things any easier. So I have to go into the bowels of Google and change the language back to English. And since Google often forgets my password, etc, this is often not too easy a task.

Any ideas of why Google goes off on its own regarding the language? And how to prevent it? I’m about ready to shitcan Google and all its frustations, and go to something like Firefox.

What operating system are you using? Is Chrome logged in to your Google account?

The operating system should have a language setting. Google also has language settings in Google account preferences. Check both.

Are you located in Germany? Does a German person borrow your machine?

Are you clearing your cookies? Stop doing that!

Different Google features seem to use different cookies for your language preference. One Google cookie that seemed to be poorly documented is available by going to
Google
(I think I learned of this at SDMB. That was years ago; maybe it has no effect now.)

Using Windows 7 (thoroughly updated). Not logged into my Google account. Can’t use Account Preferences since Google doesn’t believe that my phone number and my email address are the same as they have been for at least 10 years, so I can’t log in to change anything.

Check your IP location anc see if it’s in a German speaking location.

Then how are you able to “go into the bowels of Google and change the language back to English”??

The great thing about Google is how helpful they are when you contact them. When I bought a new laptop recently Google suddenly started showing my location as a hundred miles from where I am. I contacted Google about the problem using a link on the Maps page and within a few days my location was put right. Google is amazing when it comes to customer support. (I also switched to Chrome when I changed laptops after a bunch of freezes with Firefox which I’d been using since before v1.00. I wish I’d switched browsers years ago.)
