Has anyone else tried Google’s new ground-up browser?
I’m using it right now, it’s pretty good. It’s still in BETA of course so a lot of frills and applications that use non-kosher plug-ins aren’t working (and you can’t add dictionary exceptions), but it comes with some interesting features at least. For example I can resize this text box I’m typing in. It’s not exciting or really necessary, but apparently it’s being designed as a browser built for applications instead of just displaying webpages correctly so if they’ve given thought to how users may want to resize their forum reply boxes I’m at the very least curious to see what functionality they’re going to add for the larger applications. It also seems to load a bit faster than Firefox and Internet Explorer.
In short, try it out, it’s obviously rough as it’s early in the game so it’s not a browser replacement yet (keep FF for things that don’t display), but it’s worth keeping track of at least.
Sorry, didn’t see the Great Debates thread. Merge or whatever you need to do, the topic just seemed more mundane than GD territory so I didn’t think to look there.
I like, really like, the shift-escape option that opens up a task manager for all the processes and web pages open in chrome, with the option to terminate, very useful.
I also like the about:memory option showing the memory usage of all browsers running in the system. Firefox is kind of hefty.
I can install it again, though. See first line. Rinse and repeat.
I really thought I was going (more) insane, but according to the Help group I’m not the only one with the problem. It’s like it’s there but isn’t there.
I installed it and it seems to be nicely functional, fast and minimal. Not sure I’ll use it though, because I’m still just not all that sold on the benefits of tabbed browsing.
I don’t like it so far. You can’t close the window if the page hasn’t finished loading. Also, there’s no Adblock for it and I’ve realized I hate the internet without an adblocker.
Nah, read the EULA again, you still own the rights, they own the rights to use it for promotional purposes of Chrome (“sole purpose” even). And they have marketing people out the ass, you really think they’re going to use your paltry photobucket submission?
I mean, I’d like section 11 out, but it doesn’t seem like a real issue.
I know, right? You don’t notice Adblock and NoScript until you use a browser without them.
It’s in beta, and it’s an open source program. That means that they’ll still be working on it, and there will be project forks. If Chrome is a good program with sloppy execution, someone, not necessarily Google, will be sure to clean that execution up. So give it some time, and it’ll probably rival Firefox pretty quickly.
Nah, they use the exact same EULA for everything. It was basically Copy, Paste and maybe some find/replace. They forgot it was in there and took it out, according to email from Google my link received at least. I’m still not sure HOW their legal department missed it, but they did.
