Google does a barrel roll

Didn’t work on IE at work, and didn’t work on Opera at home :frowning:

It worked in Safari on ios 5!

Worked in Safari 5.1.1 in Lion.

And when the search results display for “do a barrel roll” the page contents will spin 360˚, if you’re using a modern browser. As mentioned in the thread, it seems to work in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Opera, at least for some people. In those four browsers (latest version) it worked for me on Windows 7 and Macintosh OS X 10.7.2 (Lion).

You would see the same effect if you went to google.com and typed in those terms in the search field.

For those of you who can’t see it, here is a YouTube video showing it.

Nope. The Google. It does nothing.

I’ve tried it in Safari 4.1.3 and whatever Firefox I have.

Here’s a video that shows what happens:

I was beat to it again!

You don’t have the latest version.

It’s the latest version of Safari that will work on this computer.

That may be. But that’s why you are not seeing what other people are seeing. Try the latest Firefox or the latest Opera or the latest Chrome.

Does anyone know what technology this is using? It must be something that FF and most modern browsers support (I see it in FF) but that even the latest IE (I am using IE 9.0.8112.16421 64-bit) does not seem to have?

I was under the impression that IE was supposed to be a lot more up-to-date, and standards compliant, than it used to be a couple of years ago, but I guess it is still behind the curve.

Doesn’t work. IE 8, Win 7

I believe it’s HTML5, which IE 9.0 doesn’t support all that well.

[QUOTE=Wired Article]
IE 9 has some support for CSS 3, but it lags behind other browsers, and it can’t handle much of SVG 1.1. From a web developer’s viewpoint, that means IE9 will load your Canvas tags, but if you’re using transforms or other animations based on CSS 3 tools, IE 9 users won’t see what you can show to Firefox, Chrome, Opera or Safari users.

It appears this only happens once per session. Here’s how to do it:

[ul]
[li]Open a fresh browser window or tab[/li][li]Go to the google.com main page[/li][li]In the search box, type “do a barrel roll” (without the quotes)[/li][/ul]

It’s pretty cool.

Did that. Just got the search results. Big whoop.

FF 3.6.15, FWIW.

Jeezus Christ, at last. Thank you.

See post 30. I am on Windows 7 and the version of Firefox I have is 7.0.1.

OS X, 10.6.8 - it doesn’t work for me with the latest version of Safari or Firefox, but does work with Chrome.

Works on the iPhone running i5.

Do any of you people know what this is a reference to?

It’s from the N64 game “StarFox 64”, which I used to play all the time; I think it was the very first game to make use of the Rumble Pack (force feedback.)

One of your squad mates (Peppy, I think) tells you to “do a barrel roll!” The quote has since become an internet meme.

FF3.6!?!? What are you, stuck in 2002?

looks it up

Oh. March 2011, you say? Never mind…
