Google Toolbar Popup Blocker Problems

I replaced Pop-Up Stopper with the Popup blocker in the Google toolbar. For weeks it worked wonderfully well, with only a tiny number of popups sneaking through.

The past week or so, though, I’m seeing several popups a day. (Wll, mostly pop-unders, now that I think about it.)

There doesn’t seem to be any setting on the Toolbar other than off and on, and blocking is definitely on.

Have the pop-up and -under creeps just gotten cleverer to get around Google or has something gone wrong? Would redownloading the Toolbar make a difference?

Sorry, I was sure I was in GQ. COula mod please move this?

I had a similar problem, and I redownloaded the toolbar. It seemed to work.

Spyware makes my Google blocker act like that. Every few days I have to run Adaware and Spybot to make sure my system’s clean, and then I don’t get popups.

Reloaded the toolbar and almost immediately got a pop-up or two.

All right, Google. See if I buy any of your stock at the IPO!

Also, Google only blocks Internet Explorer based popups - there are a good many popups that execute outside of IE (although they ook remarkably like IE windows), and therefore, slip under Google’s radar. But Google has blocked 967 for me since I last installed it about 3 months ago, so color me happy.

I have the Google Toolbar, IE6, Adaware, Spybot, and Spywareblaster, and I still get the occasional popup.

Exapno, don’t laugh, because it’s so obvious, but…make sure that “Site popups allowed” isn’t enabled or something? When I first got the Google Toolbar, I kept getting LOTS of popups at CNN.com–"Still! "–and I was very frustrated, until I realized that for some reason I must have absent-mindedly clicked it over to “Site popups allowed” instead of having it set on “blocked” (the button is right next to “News” on mine) and thus it was obediently letting all of CNN.com’s popups through.

I’m having the same problem. Google toolbar has worked great for a year or so (2677 pop ups blocked) but in the last week or so it’s been missing some. I am reasonably sure I’m spyware free, I run Ad Aware and Spybot regularly.

I have nothing constructive to add to this thread. I just hope that “Google Toolbar Popup Blocker” is the next phrase we find Zippy the Pinhead chanting over and over, for no reason.

Duck Duck Goose, it happens with sites I’m visiting usually for the first time, as a result of a Google search. So it’s not a site issue.

I happened to watch the original version of Bedazzled yesterday, in which the devil spends all of his time causing petty annoyances, like making grocery bags break or records skip. Looks like he’s still as busy as ever.

From Google:

"Thank you for your note and screenshot. If the Google Toolbar Popup
Blocker doesn’t seem to be working, you may want to check your computer
for parasitic software. This software is often bundled with free programs
such as Kazaa and BearShare and can trigger pop-up ads that appear at
timed intervals, no matter where you’re surfing on the web.

The following articles offer a more in-depth description of the problems
caused by unsolicited software:

Unfortunately, the Google Toolbar’s Popup Blocker cannot stop pop-up ads
generated by these third-party programs. If you’d like to check your
computer for this type of software, you may be interested in installing
Spybot’s ‘Search and Destroy’ and Lavasoft’s ‘Ad-Aware.’ These programs
attempt to identify and remove parasitic software. They can be downloaded
at:

Destroy)

We have no relationship with the organizations that created these programs
and cannot vouch for them ourselves.

If we can assist you further, please let us know.

The Google Team"

I do have Ad-Aware and I do update it and run it daily.

And both Boscibo and Duck Duck Goose reported having the same problem even though running both the programs mentioned in that Google letter.

I don’t think that’s the answer.

I thought I saw it in this thread already, but apparently not. Have you tried getting CWShredder? It’s designed to remove “CoolWebSearch” and its associated baddies, which isn’t removed (not completely anyway) by Adaware or SpyBot.

The code to bypass the Google toolbar (and yahoo, earthlink, etc.) is quite readily available and is being added to many sites that utilize pops.
