Google Weirnos (new game)

There are 1337 households out of which 31.6% have children under the age of 18
living with them in Sterling, NY.
There are 1337 questions spanning 20 chapters in an online firefighters test.

Closest I could get to a Perfect Wiernos…

Results 1 - 10 of about 861 for “there are 857”. (0.48 seconds)

Hehe, this is too fun.

50276 (my b-day) returned a single result (unless omitted results are counted): There are 50276 Posts, in 8009 Threads spread accross 180 forums in the Praize Directory.

And I came up with an interesting variation: type in an initial number, then re-do the search replacing the starting number with the number of found pages. I played around with a few looking for a “Weirnum loop”, but they all eventually got corrupted by rounding. I think the result count has to be less then 1000 or it rounds the last digit.

How 'bout an Anagram Weirnum Googlewhack?

There are (about) 67,000 results for 76,000, including:

76,000 Peruvians living with HIV/AIDS today,

In South Africa’s largest city, Johannesburg, there are 76,000 children who’ve been orphaned because their mothers or fathers have died of Aids

There are 76,000 registered NHS wheelchair users in Scotland

76,000 orphans in China at the end of 2001

76,000 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed every year in the United States

76,000 hospitalizations attributed to NSAID use

76,000 convicted sex offenders in California

76,000 in-line skating injuries in 1994

76,000 people on waiting lists for organs

and

In America today there are 76,000 car dealers

which leads me to believe that I may have discovered the most depressing number in existance.

There are 31 pages on this website
There are 31 letters in the Cyrillic (Russian) alphabet.

My b-day, 40779 returned a single result as well: there are 40779 photos in The Rurouni Kenshin Screen Capture Archive.

I can’t find a wiernum lower than X-ray’s - and I’ve tried a lot.

You people are insane in such a beautiful way that I could just cry…

Good one, ianzin.

There are 1,218 peanuts in a single 28 ounce jar of Jif peanut butter.

I got a “Pure Wierdnum”!

“there are 1020”

Thanks to everyone who has joined in so far!

I’m beginning to get the feeling that we have only scratched the surface of the truly weird world of weirnums. Incidentally, it seems lots of people have the same problem I have with ‘ei’ or ‘ie’. I almost always have to go back and type over.

Thanks to Capt. B. Phart for adding to the science of weirnums by introducing the ‘perfect’ or ‘pure’ concept. Unfortunately, as well as the flaws he notes, the hit count tends to vary a lot from day to day. I tried X-Ray Vision’s suggestion and it was no longer perfect by the time I tried it. I suppose this just goes to show that perfect weirnums are unstable, and can spontaneously decay into an imperfect state.

Whynot has introduced another new element to weirnum science: the concept of weirnums having emotional attributes (e.g. ‘depressing’). Just as quarks can have qualities such as ‘strangeness’ and ‘charm’, it is clearly true that weirnums can also have emotive qualities associated with them. I agree that 76,000 seems to be an unusually depressing number!

My friends, this is merely the beginning of a whole new science!

There are 2,753 households in Williamstown, MA (2000 Census)

There are 2,753 people in 1,158 households in Kidder County, ND. (2000 Census)

There are 2,753 households in Baldwin Harbor, NY (2000 Census)

There are 2,753 species of termites identified throughout the world as of 1995.

At the time of search there were 2753 live auctions for “Trout” on Ebay.

There were also 2753 live auctions for “Swedish” on Ebay.

Mmmm… Swedish Trout.

I found my results were significantly reduced if I used quotes in my search.

My birthday 42270:

And there are 42,270 dogs on O’ahu who have had a microchip
implanted to make it easier to find their owners.

this is fun!

There are 28:

…candidates on the ballot (TSRA ballot)
…natural fire seats in Russia
…digits in one cubit
…bits for multicasting
…species of elephant shrews
…There are 28 lock and dam structures and numerous other structures (mostly submerged wing dams) to maintain the navigation channel (Mississippii River)
…silver stocks listing reserves
…species of Petalidium in southern Africa
…freeway miles under electronic surveillance in Philadelphia
…Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States (from a Straight Dope Link)
…orchestras offering classical music in Silicon Valley

etc… etc… etc…

There are 830:

  • people in McLean, Texas – and also in Kilmichael, Mississippi, as well as Lexington, New York – according to the 2000 USA Census.

  • housing units in Monterey, Massachusetts – and also in Warsaw, Kentucky.

  • households in Bass Lake, Sawyer County, Wisconsin; Bushnell, Florida; and Coalgate, Oklahoma.

  • Ericsson ringtones at WeetHet.

  • film negatives in the Langton Matravers (Great Britain) Parish Museum. The styles of Langton’s 372 tombstones are featured in a sizable portion of the collection.

  • books in Powell’s aisle of Australia-Travel – and in the Gay and Lesbian Studies-Men’s Fiction aisle as well.

  • students at the “Azuolas” basic school in Prienai, Italy. 442 are described as girls, 382 as boys. Wonder what the deal is with the remaining six…

  • licensed personal care facilities (plus 4000 unlicensed ones) in Texas.

And these results are just the highlights of the first couple of pages of “about 1,190” hits returned by Google.

I’m obviously misunderstanding the meaning of a PW, because when I entered the above, I got 1040 in the upper right corner. Could someone explain this in a diffrent way (or maybe the Agents of Anti Weirdum are monitoring and screwing up the findings.)?

Refining the game

Mmm… some good finds, but I think we may be missing the true spirit of weirnum hunting here. Upon mature reflection, it has to be about more than just listing a bunch of hits (and the raw demographic data is a bit boring after a while). I think the fun comes from selecting just two hits which constitute a notable weirnum pair, being two weird factoids which you would never guess have anything in common - let alone being a perfect numerical match. These weirnum pairs hint at some bizarre underlying harmony within the universe which we mere mortals can only glimpse, tantalisingly, as thru a glass darkly.
For example, there is obviously some dark, as yet undiscovered reason why there are 813 bus routes in London and 813 natural gas rigs in the US. We are glimpsing the underlying stucture of the universe here, but the structure as a whole remains elusive.

For no good reason, I am especially fond of weirnums ending in ‘1’. F’rinstance, there are 971 people employed a the Tulalip Casino in Washington. Not 970, or 972, but 971. Which just happens to be the number of inhabited villages in Kanpur-Dehat, a district of Uttar Pradesh. Why should this be? We need answers!

There are 3521 pictures, in the ‘lounge37.com’ graffiti shirts photogaphy section (the what?!), and, strangely enough, 3521 residents in Sydney of Uruguayan ancestry. What strange force does ‘3521’ possess, that it can impose itself on archives of weird shirts and Australians with relatives in Uruguay?

Perhaps, as someone always says in sci-fi ‘B’ movies, “vee are meddling wiz forces vee do not underschtand”.

I may have found the lowest weirnum yet:

There are .00256

Or are we limited to whole numbers?

Daniel

I hope not:-
there are .00000001 cm in an angstrom

Lowest non whole number weirnum: “there are .0000003”

Capt B. Phart’s weirnum brought two hits.

What’s the lowest non-weirnum you can find?

23606 is the best I’ve done so far.

Duh, I meant to explain that. I meant getting a result like:
