Gook-guk-a-choo, Mrs. Robinson------bad songs by good artists

Just 'cause an aritist has some great songs, doesnt mean that EVERY one of his songs should be played 30 years later as a classic. But the radio stations think so!
Other examples:
Eric Clapton–
great guitarist–but why does “I Shot the Sheriff” still abuse the airwaves?
The Beatles-
Obla dee, Obla-dah. It could have been written by the “Archies”. or any other bubble gum band for 11 year olds.

Now it’s your turn…

“Jazz Police” by the inestimable Leonard Cohen makes me cringe every time I hear it.

“Raspberry Beret” by Prince

I dunno … I like Mrs. Robinson.

“Train to Bangkok” (or whatever its called) by Rush. This embarrased me when I was in high school.

“Lets get them meek bastards NOW!

I like “Mrs. Robinson” too, but I really loathe what the Lemonheads did to it … drums? Urk.

AEROSMITH Angel

THE CARS Drive
CHEAP TRICK The Flame
DOORS LA Woman
FOREIGNER I Want To Know What Love Is

STYX Babe

Two words: Mr. Moonlight

By the way, I disagree totally with JohnBckWLD’s list. All those songs are good except the one by Styx, and the thread’s supposed to be about bad songs by good bands, so the Styx entry is disqualified.

Of course we’re all gonna disagree about some of these (I’ve always loved “Ob La Di”, for instance) but as a hardcore Beatles’ fan, I can’t bring myself to listen to “The Long and Winding Road”. Yecch.

I didn’t like “Yesterday” nearly as much before I heard a recent interview on Morning Edition with Sir Paul talking about what he thinks of it now, and singing it. Damn. I bawled right there on the offramp; good think everyone else was watching where they were driving.

Okay, I know that musical taste is personal and everybody’s opinion is correct, for that person alone, but

JohnBckWLD, what are you talking about?!?

Yesterday? My Love?, Time after Time? True Colors? Those are great songs. Yesterday is one of the best songs EVER recorded!

I’ll give you Babe, and LA Woman is waaaay overplayed. As far as McCartney, I’ll give you an Ebony and Ivory or The Girl is Mine.

Beatles: “Mr. Moonlight”

Led Zeppelin: “Down By the Seaside”

Beatles: “Let it Be” “Revolution #9” “I Want Her (She’s So Heavy)”
Led Zeppelin (my favorite band): “Hats off to Harper” “No Quater”

Finch: “Ender”
At the Drive-in: “Paid Vacation Time” “Alpha Centauri”
Audioslave: “Exploder”
Coldplay: “A Whisper”
Jimmy Eat World: “Hear You Me” “My Sundown” (don’t know all of their material though)

I’m sure there are more but thats what comes to mind right away.

Moderator’s note:

Moving this to Cafe Society.

TVeblen,
IMHO mod

Pink Floyd - Young Lust
is so sub-par it makes the two post-Waters albums sound like genius.
And while we’re on the subject of Floyd alums:
David Gilmour - Blue Light
Roger Waters - everything from Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking except Every Stranger’s Eyes.
Roger’s new song, Each Small Candle or something like that, is also crap but not for the same reason.

Bruce Springsteen: Hungry Hearts

Beastie Boys: “Intergalactic” was their weakest song ever. IMO.

Led Zeppelin: I’ve never liked “D’Yer Ma’ker” - didn’t even sound like them. “All of My Love” is another dog. Ditto “Boogie With Stu.”

Grateful Dead: “Good Lovin’” is brutal. Can’t stand “Box of Rain.” “Touch of Gray” makes my teeth hurt.

A lot of Deadheads might agree about Touch of Grey, but Box of Rain is my favorite Dead tune.

Actually, I like I Am the Walrus as well.

If you count older Aerosmith as a good artist, then I nominate everything they’ve done since releasing “Crazy” (or “Amazing” or “Cryin’,” whichever came first).

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Free Bird. Worst guitar solo ever, though nearly all of their other stuff is excellent.

The Who – You Better You Bet. Boy, did they miss Keith Moon.

Led Zep – The Lemon Song. Really, really, really, really dumb.

Paul McCartney – My Love. Someone drilled a hole in his head and the sap came gushing out.

Just a few problems:

Angel is wonderful

Name is one of my favorite songs

I love Open Arms (except when Mariah Carey butchered it)

Can you name any great Cyndi Lauper songs?

and Free Bird is great
