Just 'cause an aritist has some great songs, doesnt mean that EVERY one of his songs should be played 30 years later as a classic. But the radio stations think so!
Other examples:
Eric Clapton–
great guitarist–but why does “I Shot the Sheriff” still abuse the airwaves?
The Beatles-
Obla dee, Obla-dah. It could have been written by the “Archies”. or any other bubble gum band for 11 year olds.
AEROSMITH Angel
THE BEATLES Yesterday
BLACK SABBATH Changes
DAVID BOWIE Drive In Saturday
THE CARS Drive
CHEAP TRICK The Flame
DOORS LA Woman
FOREIGNER I Want To Know What Love Is
GOO GOO DOLLS Name
GnR Patience
JOURNEY Open Arms & Who’s Crying Now
KINKS Hollywood Blvd.
CYNDI LAUPER Time After Time & True Colors
PAUL McCARTNEY & WINGS My Love
THE ROLLING STONES Angie
STYX Babe
By the way, I disagree totally with JohnBckWLD’s list. All those songs are good except the one by Styx, and the thread’s supposed to be about bad songs by good bands, so the Styx entry is disqualified.
Of course we’re all gonna disagree about some of these (I’ve always loved “Ob La Di”, for instance) but as a hardcore Beatles’ fan, I can’t bring myself to listen to “The Long and Winding Road”. Yecch.
I didn’t like “Yesterday” nearly as much before I heard a recent interview on Morning Edition with Sir Paul talking about what he thinks of it now, and singing it. Damn. I bawled right there on the offramp; good think everyone else was watching where they were driving.
Beatles: “Let it Be” “Revolution #9” “I Want Her (She’s So Heavy)”
Led Zeppelin (my favorite band): “Hats off to Harper” “No Quater”
Finch: “Ender”
At the Drive-in: “Paid Vacation Time” “Alpha Centauri”
Audioslave: “Exploder”
Coldplay: “A Whisper”
Jimmy Eat World: “Hear You Me” “My Sundown” (don’t know all of their material though)
I’m sure there are more but thats what comes to mind right away.
Pink Floyd - Young Lust
is so sub-par it makes the two post-Waters albums sound like genius.
And while we’re on the subject of Floyd alums:
David Gilmour - Blue Light
Roger Waters - everything from Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking except Every Stranger’s Eyes.
Roger’s new song, Each Small Candle or something like that, is also crap but not for the same reason.
A lot of Deadheads might agree about Touch of Grey, but Box of Rain is my favorite Dead tune.
Actually, I like I Am the Walrus as well.
If you count older Aerosmith as a good artist, then I nominate everything they’ve done since releasing “Crazy” (or “Amazing” or “Cryin’,” whichever came first).
