Bummer. We all get the Shaft on this. I really liked his journalistic photography, with and without LIFE magazine.
His work will be missed by me. I’m sure his life will be missed by those close to him.

Check out the external links to his photography. Some people felt his blaxploitation films harmed rather than helped the Civil Rights Movement. I have no dog in that fight, but I always point out his photographic work while with the FSA (and later LIFE) that helped (imho) show what was really going on in America at that time and in the decades previous to the 60s. A picture speaks a thousand words? His spoke volumes.
