Is this for real? I try not to trust anything I read on Fred Felch’s website, and while they linked to an article from an online news service, it’s one I never heard of. I knew Al Gore was a Jeezoid hypocrite (just like his running mate) but I was a little surprised by this. It’s one thing for him to court the bigot vote with statements about how homosexuality is “sexually deviant” or whatever phrase he used, but I find it hard to imagine that consorting with a fricken loon would do much for any serious politicians career.
You should be able to go to the link above, evilbeth. It seems to be a news website. I’d take the article with a grain of salt though. First of all, they seem to have made no attempt to actually contact Gore about this.
Secondly, the owners of this site are called Media Research Center, and you can become a member:
Frankly, they invented the  smilie for this story and “news source,” but aside from my doubt of these sources, I cannot give any hard evidence against the story.

I live in Topeka, Kansas where ol’ Phred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist church is located. Got to go dig out my old Phelps material but I remember some sort of letter addressing the issue your post concerns. I think Jr. may have been a delegate but in 1988 Phred and his little clan of hatemongers were not yet so openly ugly about the homosexuality issue. They only started picketing and sending the ugly faxes in 91 or 92. And YES, the site is for real!!! They picketed at my church (Grace Episcopal Cathedral) just last week. And we aren’t alone. They even picket funerals!!!
Fred is a total wacko. Originally from Missipipi he eventually ended up in Topeka in the mid-fifties. Has thirteen kids and uncounted grandkids. Has a law degree but is disbarred from both state and federal court. Many of the kids are lawyers too. In addition to gays, he hates Jews and anyone who isn’t white, just doesn’t parade those ideas as openly. I could tell a lot of horror stories from my counter-picketing days, but will let the site speak for itself.
There was an article on the Drudge Report last Monday about Gore saying things like that in an 1984 interview with the Tennesean newspaper but I have not heard anything about it since then.
As for a balanced viewpoint, the Executive Editor “joined CNSNews.com after six years at the Republican National Committee.” The Managing Editor was “senior producer for GOP-TV’s Rising Tide, the televised weekly news magazine broadcast by the Republican National Committee.” Quotes are from CNSNews.com’s staff bio page.
CNSNews.com is a division of the Conservative Communications Center, whose mission is “to provide the conservative movement with the marketing and public relations tools necessary to proactively deliver its message into the 21st century.” (bold mine, from the web page of founder L. Brent Bozell III.) This hardly sounds like an objective news source.
One final note, calling Lieberman a “Jezoid hypocrite” seems a bit odd.
Phelps offered to do some campaigning for Gore in '88. They even met in-person on a least one occasion.
The big mystery is why anyone is surprised. It should be plainly obvious that Mr. Gore will say anything and do anything to get elected. If his top campaign advisor told him that a meeting with David Duke would assure his election, he would do it. If his top campaign advisor told him that a meeting with Charles Manson would assure his election, he would do it.
Gore has no principles or core beliefs. If conservatism is in the air, he’s a conservative. If he’s campaigning in California, he’s a liberal. He’s the Lon Chaney of politics.

Thank you for the reminder, Satan, that this is GQ. Asking whether Gore assosciate with Phelps is fair, and towards that end, it’s also fair to dispute the objectivity of a cite. Discussion of the ethics of a particular candidate, however, is either GD or the Pit, dependingon the nature of the discussion.
Although we’ve established that comments about Liberman’s Jeezoiditude belong in GD or the Pit, I think I should explain that I call Lieberman a Jeezoid because, although he does not believe in the resurrection, he nonetheless is more or less identical in behavior to, well, a Jeezoid.
Perhaps we need a broader vocabulary here:
Obnoxious Christian: Jeezoid
Obnoxious Jew: Mozoid
Obnoxious Atheist: Noid
Obnoxious Agnostic: Idunnoid
Obnoxious Secular Humanist: Secular Humanoid from the Deep
Obnoxious Parsi: Zoroasteroid
