My grandchildren as about the gorillas game. They enjoyed throwing the bomb. Also it was very educational. Can anyone make it run on these new “Powerful” computers.
I run XP and have a lot of old programs that don’t want to run, some of them load but lock up when i try to run them. is it all that sinful to try using old programs? Some of them were much more expensive than the ones today.
Auto map was so cool, and no extra BS i really miss it.
Thanks
gbro
I have QuickBASIC (the version of QBasic with the compiler). If you email me a copy of GORILLA.BAS (dunno where mine went to–probably on a floppy someplace), I can can compile it to an exectuable which will run in DOS mode on any XP machine.
You know how posters here will often respond with, “Wow, only on the straight dope!”
Well, this one did it for me!
Found my copy and compiled it. It runs fine under XP, and I’ve emailed it to you. Enjoy!
I remember enjoying gorillas.bas on my XT with the hercules knockoff video card and amber mono screen.
I tweaked the program so when the bananas hit they produced a much larger explosion and a small mushroom cloud that animated up off the top of the screen. I also played with setting the gravity to Jupiter-like levels. You really had to throw your bananas carefully to hit anything in the high gravity.
Ah, the good old days when in 20 minutes you could take apart strange code, tweak it and actually get a useful result. Sadly, those days are gone forever.
IIIII-I-I-I t-t-t-r-r-y-y 'ed it and it didn’t work. I must be missing somthing.
My screen turned Black! and the thing locked me up. had to kill it with power switch, as reboot was ka-poot.
I’m sure i’m missing something. I did just try to run it from the e-mail attachment. Appreciate the everything cause my puter works yet.
It should be completely self-contained. It doesn’t call any DLLs or use any Windows API calls. Try saving it to your hard drive and running it from a command prompt.
Scorched Earth… The Mother of all Games.
If you like Gorillas… Scorched Earth is great. It is free, and there is even a Internet multiplayer version.
Still unable to make Gorilla.bas work. Did find out the program is running but the screen is blacked out. It does come in for a split second before it blacks out the screen. I have tried the resolution thing and no change.
Any help would be most appreciated.
And I’m sure I’m not the only other one who would like a copy of said game.
Email me. I’ll send a copy to anyone who asks for one. Just mention the SDMB in the subject line, or your email will get binned.
Gbrohman, I’m still trying to figure out why it won’t run for you. I’ll gtry some things and send you another copy shortly. If you don’t hear from em in a day or two, email me and gimme a kick in the ass.
Hmm… I have gorilla.bas; just for grins lemme see if there’s any way to port it to VB6. It may take a few days, and there’s no guarantee it’ll work but I’ll be sure to keep the board posted.
Should be a snap. The language hasn’t changed very much at all. I’ve got VB5 around somewhere, if I can find the CDs. If you get stuck on something, gimme a shout.
Quite a few of the commands in the QB code are no longer supported, but it hasn’t changed as much as I thought. The code has been successfully ported and compiled.
It sounds to me like the OP is having trouble running DOS applications so since this is a Windows version that should solve the problem.
dosbox is a DOS emulator with a Windows port. It’s worth a shot, anyway.
