Gort Klaatu Barata Nicto

Saw this printed on the side of someone’s cubicle in the movie Tron. Any idea what it means? I looked briefly on usenet and found no references to Tron, oddly, but apparently it was said by one of the aliens in The Day the Earth Stood Still.

It was a message relayed from Michael Rennie’s “Klaatu” by Patricial Nel to “Gort” meaning, “Get yo’ 7’6” ass over here! I’m in a heapa trouble!"

Actually, it was said by Helen benson to the peace keeper robot to get Klaatu and fix him.

Ringo Star has a nice album cover with Gort on it.

Klaatu (the spaceman, played by Michael Rennie) tells Patricia Neal that if anything happens to him, she must say these words to Gort, the robot. Otherwise Gort would wreak incredible destruction on the Earth.

Klaatu is avoiding capture when he is shot and killed by the Army. Patricia Neal goes to the spaceship. Gort disintegrates the block that the Army imprisoned him in and does the same thing to two sentries. Gort approaches her and as he is about to zap her, she says the words. He stops, picks her up and puts her in the ship. He then gets Klaatu’s body, returns to the ship and brings Klaatu back to life with some weird machine (not your average defibrillator).

That would be Goodnight Vienna

To further the spoiler:

In the original story, “Farewell to the Master,” we find that Klaatu was actually the created and Gnut (the robot’s name in the original) was the creator. That relationship was clearly not the case in the movie, but the incident did occur in the story, in which Klaatu was brought back to life.

“Klaatu Barata Nicto” were also magic words from the movie Army of Darkness, as an obvious homage to The Day The Earth Stood Still.

The hero, Ash (Bruce Campbell), spoke the words wrong, and as a result, was responsible for waking up the Army of the Dead.

Was this in the movie or the written version? I’ve never read the story, but I’ve seen the movie and I don’t recall this line or the scenes described. Of course, my memory may just be faulting me.

What does Klaatu Barada Nikto mean?

Implement Plan B

Great film. Classic scene of the saucer landing.
The original story was written by Harry Bates.

Baa Weep Gra-na Weep Ninnibong.

fnord.

This was in the movie. It was not in the short story *Farewell to the Master * because the events in the movie surrounding the line do not happen, and the robot is named Gnut, not Gort.
