Per the Staples deal I assume this is some sort of Microsoft funded promo to get Windows 7 out the door and kill old “good enough” notebook PC’s at the same time. Might not be a bad deal if you’re in the market for a new notebook and still have a older notebook/doorstop that can run XP.
You know, I could probably get XP on my old ‘built for Win98’ laptop. It’s functional! (Actually, it runs linux and the battery’s still good.)
I would think you could get a lot more than $75 for a working laptop + a license of XP by selling it on ebay…
Not really. If you’ve got an old 20 or 40 gig gig HD 512 MEG RAM celeron unit that could just barely run XP you’re not going get much more more than $ 75 on on ebay. This gets you the cash and limits the unhappy buyer risk (always a risk when selling older electronics) and boxing and shipping hassles.
I see completed auctions with final prices ranging from $89 to $134 for a working laptop meeting your specs (search terms: celeron 20GB xp).
Any particular reason the notebook had to used for Point-of-sale?
Yeah, the deal’s not worth it even for my old 400 mhz laptop.
