I don’t want to speak for Charlie Wayne, but I took his comment about seeing it through the eyes of a child as watching it as a live action comic book. Not quite as buffoonish as the Adam West series, but definitely not to be taken too seriously, what with all its comic book logic, rules and violence. At least that’s how I watch it and I’ve been enjoying it since the beginning.
Also, I think I was not alone in really disliking the Barbara character and I wonder if those same people are, like I, totally entranced by her. She’s super watchable as a psychopath and the difference is so noticeable I almost wonder if her unlikeability in the first season was deliberate on her or the producers’ part.
By the way, I’m surprised that no one has commented on Ed Nygma’s future role in Gotham City.
Seems like all the major characters have been identified except maybe The Joker. I haven’t seen any of the characters so far who would seem to evolve into The Joker - except maybe that young man with red hair. But he was killed for sure and most definitley, wasn’t he?
I’m pretty sure I know Ed Nygma’s future. But I’d like to know if anyone else would take a chance on that.
What about Kris Kringle? I do recall some show or movie or comic book in which some Santa Clause or a robot with the appearance of Santa Clause began shooting up a whole lot of people and it was a big shock to all. What was that? It didn’t have anything to do with Superman or Batman. Did it?
Oh! I found it. It was Futurama. So I guess it can’t have much to do with this show. Can it?
Wow! I just got up to Episode 13 in Season 1 and I want to say this show just keeps getting better and better! IMHO it has crossed the line into the Realm of Fabulous.
I’d love to write a big long post with all the reasons I think it is fabulous, but I get the feeling that most people would not like that.
So, let me just say that with Game of Thrones, The Americans and Fargo all off season, this has now become my most favorite show.
WOOKINPANUP talked about watching it as if it were a “live action comic book” and I think that people who know a little about the Batman series and can do that will really enjoy this show.
Charlie Wayne, are you talking about Ed Nygma being the Riddler? I mean, that is what we’re supposed to think, right? My question is if his love interest (sorry I can’t remember her name) is supposed to be a future criminal. At this point they’ve introduced all the characters that I know from the comic so now I’m going to be watching as someone who is totally new to the story.
My problem is that her transition from pampered rich girl to full-on psychopath was a fairly rapid one. Even by comic-book standards, it was pretty damn quick.
Also, what happened to the female cop Barbara had had a thing with, and the cop’s partner? Did they get killed off in season 1? I have no recollection.
Totally agree (didn’t she “turn” when she was abducted by torture chamber guy?) and I wonder if they planned the character change all along, or if they got all the hate mail I sent
Good question re the cop’s partner; maybe someone can remind us, if it was indeed ever explained. Guess they didn’t want to let go of the bisexual angle, regardless.
I am thinking that Ed Nygma is supposed to become The Riddler somehow. After all, several characters have referred to all his stupid riddles more than once and where else would that be going?
If I was producing this show, I would use the gf (Kris Kringle) to make the transition happen. She rejects him for some other guy and that causes his mind to snap. He loses his job for some crazy incident and then becomes yet another of Gotham’s criminal masterminds - The Riddler.
I’d just like to know if we have seen The Joker yet and if so, who that might be?
I assume you mean Renee Montoya and Crispus Allen. Never explained.
They simply weren’t rehired for season two.
Edward Nygma and Oswald Cobblepot:
While there is nothing preventing the show from throwing a curve, E. Nygma (enigma…get it?) is The Riddler and Cobblepot is The Penguin. These are the long-established identities from the comic books.
I don’t expect this to really mesh into any other Batman world. It’s a new take. Sure, we kinda have to have Bruce and Gordon and Alfred and Penguin and Serena (Cat) all live for a while, but they’ve already sufficiently deviated that there’s no expectation this maps to any other incarnation directly.
Sort of like how Adam West’s Batman does not connect to any other Batman. Or for a different take, look at “Nikita” as a different and separate entity from “La Femme Nikita” or any of the movies. They’re all different drawings from the same well.
Kinda like mythology, come to think of it.
I’m a little thrown by Barbara going all psycho. Seems off for Gordon to name his daughter after a psycho ex.
The guy playing Jerome does seem to be channeling Jack Nicholson as a full on psycho.
Just watched the first three episodes yesterday, and I’m still liking the show.
And at the risk of sounding skeevy, Camren Bicondova just keeps getting more beautiful. She’s gonna be amongst the most beautiful women in the history of Hollywood when she grows up.
A few weeks ago I found a 2012 movie called, “The Seasoning House”, which features Sean Pertwee as the main villain … and he plays a right evil bastard. (Warning, the movie is not for those with weak stomachs.)
Should I be reading anything into the fact that mayoral election day is November 8, which is when you would expect it to be (the day after the first Monday in November) in 2016?
I got all the way through the third, but will probably skip the…oh wait, I’m thinking of the show that’s on after Gotham (Minority Report).
Okay, I’ll ask; where was Bruce expected to change into his training gear? I figured that maybe he would do it in the school’s locker room, but then how would he get his school clothes home?
Hey! Nice catch. Good for you. Everyone else saw that but you were the only one on whom it registered.
Just more evidence this show cares a lot more about style than substance and that’s really not important for this show. But it’s fun to catch those things anyway. I’ll try to be on the lookout for more of them.
I agree, I’m loving it. The show is doing a great job of showing villains as characters beyond simply evil for evil’s sake. The only exception being Fish Mooney who never felt right in the show, she seemed a boring distraction to everything else good about the show.
Some random thoughts:
-I agree on Barbara being magnetic as a villain. Wow, what an acting and appeal change from the dry obligatory girlfriend character, she is fun to watch.
-Penguin is brilliant, what an amazing acting job.
-Gordon continues to be a solid foundation for the plots to spin around.
-Alfred smacking Selena? Whoa! The brat deserved it though, and it really helps show Alfred as a deeper conflicted character.
-Ms Kringle has to become a villain, just has to, she’s too good to throw away. Maybe a partner-in-crime with Nygma?
