Alright, so I’m doing a quasi-party at the theatre next week and I’m planning to play ‘Werewolf’ which is a party game (some call it Mafia, others have different names). Part of the game involves activity when people aren’t looking, so it is important to cover sounds. Normally it’s done by people humming or tapping or babbling, but I want to add an air of feel to it and put together a playlist of gothic music.
I’ve got Concrete Blond on the list and some other random songs, anyone else got suggestions?
Elysian Fields is somewhat Gothic, but their female singer, Jennifer Charles (who also sings with Mike Patton in Lovage) has one of the sexiest voices ever. Not “scary” music, but definitely ethereal, dark, and sexy.
Are you mostly looking for? Slow? Fast? Rocky gothic or Durgy gothic? Scary? Ambient? Distinctive vocals or ethereal vocals? More Dead Can Dance-ish or Cocteau Twins-y? What Concrete Blonde song are you using (I have all their albums)? What are the other songs you already have? I could make a podcast for you (no talking) of some song suggestions, if I know what you’re looking for. I have some Elysian Fields too.
The idea is that I’ll put the playlist on in the background and turn it down when players have to talk, then during the silent portions I would turn it up to cover noises.
I’m using Bloodletting by Concrete Blonde, and am looking for mellow ambient sort of stuff.
If you get a chance, check out my podcast pages. On each show page you can listen to a short sample of each song on the podcast, or you can also do this in the “Artists played” section. You won’t be interested in a lot of the songs, but you might find a few that strike your fancy. If you do this let me know which ones you’re interested in.
This thread brings back memories of my church youth group. We played mafia a lot and the youth pastor is into goth rock and introduced me to some of these bands.
Bauhaus might be a little distracting for background music. Bela Lugosi’s Dead might be okay, but they go crazy a lot in most of their other songs.
Joy Division’s later stuff might work, but not their earlier punky stuff.
The album Floodland by The Sisters of Mercy is pretty good.
Echo and the Bunnymen aren’t exactly goth (they’re not too far from it though), but their album Ocean Rain might work well. It’s mellower and more atmospheric than their other early albums.
A couple of individual songs to consider:
I’m not a huge fan of The Church, but their song Under the Milky Way is great.
Peter Murphy, the lead singer of Bauhaus, has a song called Cuts You Up that I really like. His solo music is a lot mellower than his music with Bauhaus and a lot of it probably wouldn’t be considered goth, but I’d say Cuts You Up would count. It might be a little too catchy though.
I’ll agree with those who mentioned Dead Can Dance and This Mortal Coil.
Rasputina, apparently, is classified as gothic music. They are very awesome and you should listen to them a lot.
If you’re looking for individual songs, try Transylvanian Concubine, Gingerbread coffin, Endomorph, Antique High Heeled Red Doll Shoes, Momma Was an Opium-Smoker, When I Was A Young Girl, Saline The Salt Lake Queen (my favorite!), Girls’ School, Dwarf Star, Leechwife, Diamond Mind, Crybabies, Sister Sleep, uhh…
