Government Agencies to help the handicapped?

Hello all. My father is recently handicapped (well, he has only recently conceded that he needs help.) He is able to drive anywhere he wants, but is unable to walk very far when he gets there. We have purchased an electric scooter for him to use, but he is not strong enough to lift it. I tried to get him a lift installed for his car, but the dealership that sells the lifts claims that his trunk is too small and suggested that we buy a van. As much as I would love to go out and buy him a van, this is currently beyond my fiscal abilities.

My questions: What agencies (federal and PA state) exist to help him? How do I track down agencies on my own? Does anyone have any other suggestions for questions that I have not been wise enough to ask?

Thanks!

Maybe the AARP has some suggestions? I think they’re private, but because it seems that they lobby so much for retired people’s issues, they may have relevant info. Good luck!

A wonderful idea Violet! I will try them straight away.

Your state’s Dept. of Health and Human Services, or whatever it’s called? Plus lots of nonprofits should be able to provide you some helpful referrals, or maybe a nearby hospital with a good physical rehabilitation unit.

Visiting Nurses Assn & Medicare & of course, the local senior citizens center should have plenty of info for starters.

i also think that there’s some type of electric lift that can go onto the back of the car, something like a bicycle carrier that can go into a tow hitch assembly, in case none of the other references pan out.
